In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have no idea if this is the "correct" answer, but just consider a couple of things:

1) OT - Jews and the Law. When upholding the covenant means subscribing to a certain set of rules, it seems that deviation from those rules would incur a harsher penalty. The Jews knew the Law well, and knew what was needed to be faithful.

2) NT - Gentiles. Weren't subject to the Law. You use a more gentle approach with those who are truly ignorant than with those who know and choose to disobey. But God reproved them too in some of St. Paul's writings. So it's not that they were off the hook, but that God chose to deal with them differently than He did with the Jews.

So it wasn't, as you wisely pointed out, that God Himself changed, but perhaps that how God interacted with people was dependent upon which group they belonged to. God treats everyone justly, but He does not treat everyone the same.

Also, the OT faithful had a more primitive understanding of God. Revelation was not complete at that time. Before the Incarnation, Almighty God was not a personal God (if that makes any sense). He was unapproachable except through the priests. Jesus taught many things that further revealed the nature of God... including dispelling OT beliefs such as the belief that all sickness is punishment from God. Also, that He is our Abba Father who loved us so much He sent His only Son.
