Why do atheists care about a Christian forum?

I get it. You set up a phony criterion for posting in someone else's thread---one completely unrelated to its subject---and then suggest it should function as standard for posting here. It's very obvious where you're coming from, and you have my sympathy.

I think many people who are agnostic/athiest were raised or at some point chrisitan or another faith. Sometimes looking back is useful in determining your path in the future.

The E & M subforum is what attracted me here in the first place. I work in health care and have served on an ethics committee. I post on several ethics-oriented web sites and message boards to acquire and exchange ideas from different perspectives. And I've gained insights that I've actually used in my committee work. I still hang around because it's fun. I don't expect to convert anyone to my way of thinking, but engaging in intellectual debate is stimulating. Defending one's views sharpens the mind.

hehe i got a hunch that part of the 'charm' of debating is that it interrupts boredom, at least for a while, and is possibly an escape from some kinda emptiness echoing in a soul that is looking for something more.....

it be just a hunch, y'all...not a proclamation o' truth

actually i don't have objections to 'atheists' or anyone else seeking out 'Christian' sites. I don't have a need to defend God. He can take care o' Himself. But i do find it amusing when someone 'insists' on debating what 'my' beliefs are. I have no need to put 'notches' on my belt or be on the prowl to 'convert' anyone. The Holy Spirit does that. But i do believe in stating clearly what i believe, in person, on here, on the bus, to drug dealers, and anyone else i may speak to. God does the rest.

I was told by an atheist the other day that he was here to get me and people like me banned and that he had made that clear with his first post here. So, while I know there are some here for honest discussion (and I do appreciate those, because I really enjoy it and them) many are here just to be a thorn in the sides of other people.

here are my thoughts on the matter...completely different then most...i believe we are all God's children regardless if we practice in faith or not...God created us all for His glory and purpose and regardless of our rebellion I think He tries very hard to draw us all to Himself...there is a spiritual battle goin on hence why there are so many non believers out there...and i believe that it is our duty to love them into the body of Christ where they belong...where home is...I believe regardless if they are just out to rebell against us or not...that part of that is God askin us to speak into their hearts about how much He misses them...and how its not about religion at all but a relationship with Jesus Christ...I believe its time we all as Christians step up to our duties and calling...and pursue the hearts that are still here...if we all learned to love like God has called us to...this world would be a better place...can i get an amen?

Who precisely are you accusing of "having no standards" of morality? Do you mean the non-Christian posters here in E&M? Do you mean people who characterize themselves as "liberal"? If so, I feel it necessary to tell you that you are absolutely wrong.

I shall use myself as an example. I am a non-Christian (specifically, an atheist) and consider myself "liberal," but I have very definite standards of morality, and I defend them fiercely. My standards involve respect, compassion, education, liberty, informed consent, and the importance of context. (I would be happy to elaborate on any or all of these things, if you are interested.) There is nothing "bestial" about these things. There is nothing "self-serving" about them -- in fact, they define and shape how we should and should not treat others.

If someone has a different standard of morals than you do, that does not mean or imply that they have no standard of morals at all, or that they are "evil." Before you start tossing around words like "evil" to describe those who disagree with you, perhaps it would behoove you to learn more about those people and what they actually think.

In response to the OP, I come here to debate because I enjoy debating, because religion is an interesting topic, because I like to try and understand people who think in a very different way than I do, because discussion and debate make for good mental exercise, and because something I say might give someone else something to think about, which I consider worthwhile.

If this is how you feel, it might be a good idea to talk to someone about it. There is much less of a stigma these days about seeing a therapist, and it does a lot of good for many people.

The only people who argue about "bestial natures" subscribe to dualism, and that's a whole big can of worms. The early church fought dualism. Dualism goes against Genesis. Why people promote it is beyond me[sup]3[/sup].

I, for one, see nothing wrong with admitting that we have animal instincts, and animalistic desires. It is, IMHO, far worse to act as though these must be fought than to find a constructive way to use them.
