Scripture speaks of all Christians pooling all they have and using it for all. Interesting that they were able to live this way and we are not.

Actually what Scripture speaks about concerning the Early Christians, was pure communism.

This is the first I have heard a Christian seem to insult the Christian community set up with the Apostles.

Shannon, your threads are always interesting
american christians always seem to act like capitalism is part of the gospel!
lazefare capitalism is not christian at all
and all the silliness that is noted in your link, with so so much money resting on things that are not real, that does not sound wise...

Perhaps you misunderstand what the term "communism," actually means.

When people live together in "common," that is communism. Everything is given over to the common good of the people living in the community.

It works well in convents, monasteries and some secular communities.

From Acts 4:32

The community of believers was of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they had everything in common.

Don't confuse it with Socialist Communism ala Marx or Mao.

That is why I wrote "seem" because I thought you might be referring to Socialist Communism.

Thanks for clarifying that.

I am surprised that this thread got as far as #12 before socialism and communism were mentioned .

Criticise Capitalism , and out come the labels " socialist " or " communist " devoid of any content as to what these terms mean .

The driving force of Capitalism is the profit motive . This invariably leads to greed and love of money . Human beings become dehumanised , being simply part of the profit -making machinery .

Put the teachings of Jesus alongside the actual practice of Capitalism , and consider whether they are compatible . I am not referring to the airy-fairy notions of Capitalism that are used to defend it . I mean Capitalism as it is practised in nearly every country in the world , helping to create an individualistic , materialistic , and self-seeking ethos .

There must be another way . Christians cannot go along with this corrupting system without themselves being corrupted , which unfortunately seems to be the way of things at the moment .

We shouldn't reject capitalism per se, but unbridled capitalism should be feared.

Jim
Have you seen what bridled "corporatist" capitalism has been doing lately? Capitalism married to the State (State Capitalism, i.e., fascism) is far more exploitative than unbridled capitalism. Socialism is to be rejected because of its stance on private property, as is communism. Mercantilism leads to fascism in that the State controls access to raw materials and distribution of finished goods, feudalism is rejected because it is tantamount to slavery. What does that leave? There is no economic system that has been approved of by the church. Since capitalism does the most to promote freedom, individualism, and the sanctity of individual human dignity, its the best we got.

Not all Capitalism is bad however and nations with regulated capitalism do the best for all of its people.

Compare any system throughout history, and regulated capitalistic societies are the better path.

You'll never get a pure communist system that will work well in a secular society. Greed and lust for power will always corrupt it to levels beyond the damage capitalist systems will do.
