It's baffling to me why there would be resistance to studying Muhammad. I mean, worst case scenario, suppose everything we know of him is legend. The real facts couldn't be much worse.I think it will be interesting some day when secular historians are allowed to flesh-out some theories for the historical Muhammad as they have been doing for the historical Jesus.
I wonder if the historical Muhammad is more attainable than the historical Jesus because it is more recent or if it might be less attainable because Islam was defined top-down instead of bottom-up like Christianity.

Most of the peaceful and tolerant things that Mohammed wrote in the Koran were written when he was in Mecca and not in a position of authority. Later, in Messina, the verses become harsher; the hatred more real and the command to not befriend Jews or Christian is penned.

Apparently Muhammad married Aisha the daughter of Abu Bakr when he was 50 and she was 6. They consummated the marriage when she was 9. It sounds bad by modern standards, but probably it was a political arrangement. Aisha seems to have been a very accomplished person.
