Years ago one of my sisters friends needed somewhere to live and so she stayed with us. She attended a SDA church. She would bring home videos which my mum and myself would watch. n one of these videos it said rock music was wrong and we shouldn't listen to it including christian rock. So several questions from this
1. Is this a common belief?
2. Where (and how) did this belief arise from in the SDA church?
3. Should the only instrument used in church be a organ in the opinion of SDA church? (that was also stated in the video)

thanks in advance for your response

No. It's not a common belief. The SDA church does not have an official standing on this, at least I don't think so. Piano, violin...are also used in the service. It's not the instruments but the type of music is played.

Music is not neutral. Of certain frequency (low), it can be hypnotic: such as rock and hip hop. Just because parts of the lyrics are changed, it doesn't mean it's appropriate to listen to. Some of the popular 'christian' rock bands have issues with drugs, played for R rated films and have questionable lyrics.

You saw the film, maybe you can form your own opinion.

You will find the same thing in many of the more fundamental denominations. Bob Larson used to be into the against rock music stance but has since changed to accepting Christian rock music. Still like everything in life there is going to be good stuff and bad stuff and that is true of christian music just as it is regular rock music.

As for certain music being hypnotic yes in a way it can be that is overall the effect of all music, i.e. to change the emotional state of the hearer. However the windsheild wipers can be hypnotic also of a Gregorian Chant. Hypnotic is just a different conscious state it won't make you into something you are not.

As taste are so very different in what people like I would just encourage that you check out the lyrics and see if they build you up in some way or you find them meaningful. In life you have to make your own decisions you just need to have good reasons for your decisions. Unless you want someone else to make you decsions for you...there are those kind of people around, but I can't think of any good reason to give my reasoning ability over to them.

It is good to know it isn't a common view. I haven't had much involvement with SDA churches or people. After watching several of the videos my sisters friend gave us to watch I decided to keep my distance a little as that was the first time I'd known a SDA. I disagreed with almost everything said in the videos. Especially the bit about the organ being the only instrument that should be used in church. I just thought I'd find out if that was a common belief. Thanks for puting me straight. I will say that I agree music isn't neutral and should be judged by individual merit as to if it is good or bad rather than judging it by genre.
