  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

As a little background I'll simply say that I am severley uneducated as far as the bible is concerned. Well, I suppose I'm generally uneducated having completed only two years of college. I have been in and out of church my whole life and I feel I have finally received my call from God. I need help getting started. Sometimes I wonder if I'm not in too much of a hurry. My callsign on this forum reflects my soul. I'm hungry for God and his word. I hunger for understanding of the bible. I have purchased a book by Dr. Max Anders. 30 days to understanding the bible. It is giving me a general overview of the bible and seems to be helping me understand how the bible is put together. I'm abosorbing it and have learned the order of the Books of the Old Testament and that is something I've never come close to accomplishing until now. What else should I do? Anything? God Bless you all and thank you.

1. Well the most important part is to get a set routine for reading Scriptures every day. Try out different times for reading - I think I'm a day person; I get the most out of it when I read it in the middle of the day. Many however read before they go to bed and others when they wake up. Do whatever works best for you, as long as you can make it regular.
2. Read praying. Pray before you start, and if you don't understand, pray afterwards. Praying keeps you focused and helps you understand and remember. It might make going through the Bible a bit slower but it's worth it.
3. Read systematically. Find a plan, and stick to it. You'll get a clearer picture if you read it in a logical way. [If I were you I'd start with the New Testament and Psalms and Proverbs and the start the other parts of the OT].
4. Read, read and read.
5. If you haven't already, find a group of christians to talk about the Bible with. Process, share, grow and enjoy.

God bless, I hope you'll find your way!

Dear friend God loves u so much and wouldn't want you to perish. He has all you need to serve Him. Keep reading and meditating on His word for the Bible said in Matthew 5:3 ''Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven''.

The Bible also said "For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my Word" (Isaiah 66:2).

God bless you as you accept and satisfy this hunger.

hungry,
I recommend a book that will give you a basic understanding of how to interpret the Bible. It is: How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth, Gordon Fee and Douglas Stuart (Zondervan). I wish I had read this one in the early days of my Christian life. I find it to be dynamite.

Are you in a church where there is good Bible teaching, with expository preaching?

I recommend prayer...I remember I was reading Matthew and came to the part when Jesus says let not the left hand know what the right hand is doing. I read this one verse over and over again for about 30 min - an hour with no understanding of it. Finally, I said, "God, I want to understand I do but I just don't get it, PLEASE help me understand your word." All of a sudden, I started to see things that I have done in my life for others and how I felt when I did them. After this revelation, I UNDERSTOOD, Jesus was saying when you do a deed don't weigh it out against how it could benefit you... just do it from the heart with all intentions and no expectation. This was revealed to me by God... so, you see if you have a desire to seek God then God will honor it and He will teach you as he taught Paul. All He requires is prayer and belief. Try praying: Father, thank you for your divine word, thank you for allowing me to come to you, Father I ask that you provide to me the knowledge of your word....Holy Spirit be my guide today as I read your word, and teach me the things I need to promote you, Lord. IN JESUS NAME Amen."

Then just wait for God, as the disciples did to receive the Holy Spirit. Seeking God is a marathon and some people will understand faster than others but unlike a race, pace does not matter, what matters is as long as you finish the marathon. God will direct you...you just wait on Him.

God Bless you and I love you keep doing what your doing

hungry,
Here's a good starter for understanding Christian beliefs: Wayne A. Grudem 2005. Christian Beliefs: Twenty basics every Christian should know. Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan. You can read some of it HERE.
