Hi SS,

I agree with dave. There is very little that we can use to confirm any sure dating of when Job lived. There are a number of possibilities that have been floated out there, but as far as any real evidence to confirm any of them, it's very lacking.

So, while I imagine that your question may spark some lively debate, coming to any verifiable conclusion on the subject is not going to be forthcoming. Your question will remain as much unanswered after this thread falls out of favor as it was when first posted. At this point, I think that most of the evidence points to sometime after the flood, but the estimates for a more exact dating span 3-4 centuries beginning possibly 3-4 centuries after the flood. That leaves a lot of wiggle room.

Job appears to be a non-Israelite. We don't know when the book was written nor do we know at what period in history Job was alive.

Some take the book to be allegorical entirely, though I believe it to be historical.

Strictly chronologically speaking: I would place Job's story sometime shortly after Abraham died (During the life of Jacob) from a PDF article I read a long time ago (that I currently cannot find anymore). The article used the genealogies to pin point his most likely time of when Job lived (Suggesting that Jobab was "Job").

Abraham was also was a great man of faith and God said Job was unique.

As for a natural flow of reading all the narratives in the Bible as a whole, I think a good place to read Job's story would be inbetween the story of Joseph and the story of Moses.

1. Joseph's Story.
2. Job's Story.
3. Mose's Story.

I say this because there is a natural narrative flow from Abraham to Joseph that should not be broken up.

Anyways, by looking at Christ, we can see that a chronology of Job being placed after Abraham's death and during the time of Jacob's life fits well.

1. Abraham offering his only Son Isaac = Picture of God the Father offering His only begotten Son Jesus Christ.
2. Job = A picture of Christ suffering (even though He was innocent) as a part of a greater purpose of God's plan.
3. Jacob = A picture of the Substitonary Atonement. Jacob assumed the identity of the firstborn son (Esau) in order to obtain the blessing. When the Father sees a Christian, He should see His firstborn Son Jesus by the way that they have lived (by allowing Jesus to work thru them).
4. Joseph = A picture of Jesus as the reigning King.
5. Moses = A picture of Jesus being the Deliverer. For Moses delivers His people and leads them to the Promised Land. Jesus will one day return to set His people free and set up a 1,000 year reign with them (And they will finally inherit the Promised Land).

This is the best summary/accounting of Job i've ever heard/watched. I've done Bible studies on Job, and through it all, i've found Job to be one of the misunderstood and maligned men in the Bible.

One of his very favorite songs of mine is El Shaddai.
There's a line that says, "Through the years you made it clear that the time of Christ was near. Though your people could not see what Messiah ought to be. Though your word contained the plan, they just could not understand."

I love Israel. They are God's chosen people. Have been since He brought them by His hand out of Egypt and always will be in this realm. Oh, they are, for the most part, a faithless lot, but they are the apple of God's eye. Despite their faithlessness, God used them in a most awesome way to bring His Scriptures and His Son into the world of His creating. God will restore Israel.

We are often so like Israel in what this song proclaims. Though His word contains the plan, we just cannot understand.

I was also born again in the later 90's.

Yes, this is a nice song. This is one of my other favorites by Mr. Card.

As for Israel:
I believe they will repent as a nation sometime shortly before Christ returns.
Then there is the 144,000 during the End Times, too.
It will be such a joy for God when they return back home to Him.
