  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What's your opinion of a good blog software?

What are you opinions of a nice blog software?

I just finished writing up a simple one which took me a while to do and still not done. There's so much you can add to a blog it really does become a full fledge platform for many things.

Some of the stuff I've done on my blog :

- Uses just 2 pages (blog list page and article page)
- Allows the blogger to create their own blogs using the same 2 pages
- Blogger uses bbcode-like functions to create content (ie. bold, quotes, intro etc)
- Bloggers has access to an admin section where they can change passwords, view all/self/listform of blogs, set blog type, articles per page etc.
- Articles can be searched via keywords in the title or content
- Articles has searchable tags
- Articles can be searched via day, month or year
- There is a 10 ten list of the latest articles, most viewed and most commented
- Has a paginator
- Blogger can toggle each article to perform mass function such as making them public, private or to delete
- Blogger can upload images from the local computer to the photo database and use them in their articles using bbcode-like functionality
- Blogger can upload images from a remote site

Now that I think about it, there's a bit

I wouldn't say wordpress is the be all and end all of blog and content management systems there are some other pretty fancy ones around that i haven't really looked at. Having said that i just finished putting together my blog using wordpress a open source theme and a couple of other pluggins and by starting from there and modifying them to suite my needs rather then working from scratch i got most of it up in 2 or 3 days. But web development doesn't really interest me that much i have more interesting things to be working on in my opinion.

Yeah I started out on wordpress, just didn't fit the kind of theme I was looking for (something lightweight, unobtrusive and uncomplicated). I was getting pretty tired of looking at cluttered, flashy designs and too many options. The wordpress culture has gotten big the last time I saw it and even more confusing.

Leesy, Web development (backend) is a lot of fun, I noticed that you're into engineering, if NAND and OR is your thing then web 2.0 is a walk in the park! Can I ask why your site uses a lot of dark colours? Looks very dark, almost suicidal lol.

Um the dark theme is personal preference my linux boxes run a darkish theme as well. Some people seem to like them some people seem to like light ones i have no idea why guess theres just all types in the world. But that theme is a bit darker then i would like i wanted to add some more colour to it but haven't got to it and probably won't have the time for a while. And yeah web backend development probably is fun but im very limited by time and having other things to do. To put it into some sort of perspective i was working for a engineering firm over the aussie summer mainly programming so when i got home i didn't really feel like doing much. Normally i am still a full time student and am busy with other stuff at church and all over the place so unfortunately often i'm limited to uni stuff except for quiet periods and breaks. I won the domain name and hosting in July and the first time ive really had to get a site up is the last couple of weeks and it has been near the top of my list of projects. I'm sure that i could take a year off everything and work full time on all my side projects and not get all the ones i already have in my head near complete. So im sure if i had the time id be more then capable of doing some web backend stuff and would find it fun but ever since i started uni theres always been something about CPU design that ive liked sometime not to far into second year i came up with a design for a basic cpu and ive been tweeking it since at somepoint ill build it on a fpga and i like low level embeded stuff cos you can solder a bit and play with physical stuff at somepoint my net books getting tank tracks and software so it can drive itself around and there are alot of other idea's id like to work on but for now the lack of time sucks and who knows someday i may get to properly writing my own site but untill then ill probably use wordpress because ive used it before and with not to much work i can pick up enough to hack it to suite my needs. and i think i enjoy the challenge of working on more advanced systems and to write a website doesn't present me with the same level of challenge so im not as likly to find it fun but thats just me. I know alot of people enjoy webdev but each to there own we probably wouldn't get very far if everyone enjoyed the same stuff.

What Linux distro are you running?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx on my netbook at the moment. On my desktop computer, I am running Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit and Kubuntu 9.10 64-bit. The first is my development partition and the other is my stable partition. I also have openSuSE 11.2, Fedora 12, Mandriva 2010 and SimplyMEPS 8 installed (all are 64-bit).

I also have Windows installed on three computers, but never use it myself. My wife uses Windows and I have to maintain them.

LOL why are you running so many different distros?

I really like Linux now, much better than what it was 10 years back when we had redhat ;-)

Making great progress with my blog, the problem is I keep modifying it which means that I will probably need to start creating version numbers.
