  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I'm a Nikon Girl... I have a D1X

But I still have a soft spot for Minolta's film cameras, and of course the old Pentax K1000...the worlds only INDESTRUCTABLE camera...once knew a person who actualy dropped one off a waterfall...the lens had a few scratches but the body was perfectly fine!

Well, the camera I'd like to get is a European brand, I think, not sure... it's called a Minolta. It's like... 600 dollars.

For the money, let me recommend either a Panasonic Lumix or one of the Canons. Reason: faster lenses, fewer blurry pictures from camera shake. I believe one of the Minoltas has an in-camera system to help with camera shake, but I like my Lumix, which has a system of gyroscopes built into the Leica lens. Optical Image Stabilization. That lens is unbeatable.

Panasonic Lumix? Hmm... is it it's own company, or is it made by another? And approximately, how much is it? Thanks for the info, by the way!

The Lumix cameras are made by Panasonic, and they incorporate a lens by Leica. The lens is very bright throughout its range (equivalent of 35-420 mm zoom, with a maximum aperture of 2.8 throughout) and has Optical Image Stabilization, a series of gyroscopes that are activated while you shoot to compensate for camera shake. The latest models are the FZ10 and FZ15, with 4-megapixel sensors, and the FZ20 with a 5-megapixel sensor. The FZ15 and FZ20 have focus assist lamps, since the autofocus on the previous cameras had some difficulty focusing in low light. (However, using manual focus instead solves the problem.)

The only type of photography that the Lumix isn't ideal for is landscape, when you want sharp focus throughout the photo. (Minimum aperture is 8.) The macro setting focuses to within 2 inches at wide angle.

I'm very happy with the pictures I've gotten thus far. The lens makes the most of the sensor's resolution capabilities. Without cropping, I could print film quality 11 x 14's (if my printer was capable).

for general use the 35mm quality rangefinder..you dont need to focus for landscapes and the standard 35mm focal length lens is ok...its the filters which can be a bind..
so
the 35mm slr system outweighs it in many respects..
i dont have a digi cam yet...just seem to be stuck like glue to that 35mm format and handleability..

FZ20's cost between 5 and 6 hundred dollars, depending on where you buy. If you're not afraid to purchase via internet, I'd recommend either B&H Photo or Adorama. I've had good experiences with both.

Before you buy, though, read some review sites, such as Steve's Digicam and DCRP Review, to make sure that there isn't another camera for the price that will do what you want even better. It's not that there's a better digicam out there for the price, but that what the Lumix does and what you want may not be the same thing.
