7 What sorrow awaits the world, because it tempts people to sin. Temptations are inevitable, but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting. 8 So if your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. Its better to enter eternal life with only one hand or one foot than to be thrown into eternal fire with both of your hands and feet. 9 And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. Its better to enter eternal life with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.[

i think the whole thing may be a warning against the tempter.
also what other gospels paralel this?

I definitely wouldn't take this one literally, especially for the fact that having one less eye won't cause you to lust after women less.

I think that it's more to emphasize how horrible it would be to spend all eternity separated from God just because you wanted 5 minutes with a harlot. That you should do everything in your power to resist the temptation.

I would agree that the first part is about the tempter but then it goes to the one being tempted. Many christians don't see that they tempt other christians as Peter tempted Jesus in Matthew 16.
22 Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, "God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you." 23 He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."
Just as Peter tried to get Jesus to turn from what God appointed him to do, sometimes christians do this to other christians in their church or another church. I can't tell someone what God wants them to do with their life or if God has given them a gift of the HS and I tempt them into not receiving it because I am weak in faith. That can be a grave sin.

At the same time, the christian who is tempted by persons or circumstances, they need to cut those out of their life. As an example, a person may have a childhood friend that can very destructive to their marriage. If this is the case, the old friend needs to be cut off so that they don't lead the person into a divorce and sin. Or, if a person has a problem drinking alcohol and it causes problems, the person should stay away from alcohol. It is better to cut away what causes sin than to lose eternal salvation.

29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.
Mark 9:
42 "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe (in me) to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed than with two hands to go into Gehenna, into the unquenchable fire. 44 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life crippled than with two feet to be thrown into Gehenna. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. Better for you to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into Gehenna, 48 where 'their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.'

I'm still looking for a church with a small ceremonial guilotene next to the confessional.

Maybe he should have suggested cutting off something else to cure that one. Or maybe he did but the Evangelists who wrote it up were less coarse in their language than Paul.

I think it should be taken literally. Sin is against God and separates us Him from us. However, Jesus is the deliverer. And I believe that if we struggle against and hate our sin enough to cut off the offending part, Jesus will deliver us from that sin. But there is someting in the struggle that refines our faith - provided we are struggling before God and not against Him.

It means whatever we do they may take us away or impede our service to God should be got rid of a.s.a.p. so our service to God is not diminished.

Just something to ponder over...Think about how painful it would be to cut off your own foot or gouge your own eye out. But no matter how painful that may seem to be, this verse is saying that the pain of Hell will be much much worse. Yikes...
