  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

What is the difference between an Encyclical, an Apostolic Letter, an Apostolic Constitution and an Apostolic Exhortation?

Each of the above are intended to address specific things in the context appropriate to whom the above are addressed to.

(the audience) those who hear by oratory sermon and exhortation. And the above address to readers receive the encyclicals and apostolic letters.

hope this helps.

Not really, they are all documents issued by Popes. I assume there must be a difference or why name them differently. There doesn't seem to be any consistency in who they are addressed to.

For example the Encyclical Fides et Ratio is addressed To the Bishops of the Catholic Church.

The Encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistica doesn't seem to be addressed to anyone.

The Encyclical Evangelium Vitae is addressed To the Bishops Priests and Deacons Men and Women religious lay Faithful and all People of Good Will

The Apostoilic Exhortation Ecclesia in Europa is addressed TO THE BISHOPS MEN AND WOMEN IN THE CONSECRATED LIFE
AND ALL THE LAY FAITHFUL

The Apostolic Letter Novo Millennio Ineunte is addressed TO THE BISHOPS CLERGY AND LAY FAITHFUL

(all from John Paul II)
