I am single never been married and I dont have a partner. in the Uk we have civil partnerships for same sex couples. This group of people are now wanting to be married. Then there are heterosexuality couples who never marry. Of those who marry some have civil weddings some are married in church.

This had lead me to really ask what is marriage is it a ceremony is it just for Christians. should it only be available to those who can afford it.

In my question I am not asking who can marry, but what is marriage and have we lost the meaning of true marriage is.

Um, Marriage is defined differently by almost EVERY major religion. Marriage is a religious institution supporting various types of civil unions as defined by the religions. . .. thus in some countries (cultures) and religions: polygamy, polyandry, arranged marriage, gay marriage, no gay marriage, etc, etc . .. . Because there are many religions, there are many definitions of marriage. A civil union is, however it is defined by the laws of the country. Where we get into problems is when a country attempts to define marriage legally. We can say, "no polygamy" because we don't like those Mormons (the root of anti-polygymy laws in the US) but it is actually a form of breaching our 1st amendment. Now I am a very happy guy with my one woman and have no desire for a collection of wives. . .. but when I read the first amendment and see laws forbidding polygamy . . . the incompatibility is inescapable. Of course it is wrong to forbid gay marriage in religions that support it, of course it is wrong to compel gay marriage in religions that oppose it. Of course it is wrong to compel arranged marriage . . . etc. Marriage does NOT have one definition. Marriage is defined by whatever religion or lack thereof, its participants adhere to. Much akin to asking "what is worship". As a follower of Shinto what worship is and you will very likely get an answer every bit as valid as the completely different answer you'd get from a Midwestern Assemblies of God-type Christian or a NYC Atheist. The terms are defined by the religion of the individuals involved. The State passing laws promoting one religion's ideas over all others is against the United States Constitution . . . and I say this as a very happy, monogamous/hetero Christian male.

Yes, we have lost the beauty of true Marriage. Marriage was designed by God himself and was to be a lifelong Union between ONE man and ONE woman which is to glorify The Creator , show unconditional love to one another, provide the daily care for each other , and to be the best environment for Offspring. It is supposed to be honored by all and never to be 'put asunder' (or broken up) .

Like the USA, your Country has gone the way of severe moral degradation by certain Groups that want to destroy this vital Godly Institution called Marriage in addition to wanting no semblence of anything Godly left in society whatsoever . God, his Church, Christ, Christians are seen as highly undesirables because they only serve to thwart whatever One FEELS LIKE doing when it comes to lifestyle choices ; the Christian Faith in particular is seen as fly in the ointment to having unbridled Hedonism and the reminder such people get of thier sin whether by seeing a Cross on the top of a local CHurch / from Christians going off to Church on a Sunday morning to give God his rightful honor/ Christians in the workplace/Christian books/Christian Ministries/Nativity Scenes at Christmastime/or even Christian Forums like this one we are on....all serve as a continuous irritation and an in-your-face reality check of the relationship they SHOULD be having with the Creator of the Universe they live in.

Dont listen to or follow our mixed up ungodly immoral Culture, and take your time looking for a Godly Man to eventually marry....pray to God about it often, and grow in your knowledge and relationship to God .

The BEST book ive found on Finding the Love of Your Life is the book by the same title, written by Dr. Neil Clark Warren. www.amazon.com.uk should have it.

Marriage has been defined in a thousand and one different ways across the many, many cultures that have existed, and do exist, on this planet. The only feature common to the majority is that of commitment and the societal recognition that the married couple now constitute a new family.

That's it.

Anything else is just bells and whistles. Monogamy vs. polygamy, one man one woman vs. one man many women vs. many men many women vs. two men vs. two women... adults only vs. adults and children, consent only vs. forced marriage, love vs. convenience, humans only vs. bestial marriage, [only valid if sanctified by religion X] vs. secular judge, religious component only vs. religious and civil/secular components, must have kids vs. kids are separate...

All those extra bits are bells and whistles that flavour the commitment and the creation of a new family which is, ladies and gentlemen, the real traditional marriage.

Marriage is an institution which set up by God.
In Genesis God realise that Adam the first human needed an help meet.
He made Eve and she became his wife. Marriage is the foundation of the family, when two people are married they become one.

Marriage shows committment to be with someone. Today sad to say, marraige has become like a dispensable piece of clothing.. If you do not like it anymore just leave and go for something else.

It is the only physical relationship that Christ associates with his church.
Christ said that his church should prepare herself as bride prepares for her husband. A man's love for his wife, shows the kind of love Christ has for his church. With this in view, we can see how obnoxious those who hang on to the homosexual agenda. On the other hand adultery is something that destroys the sanctity of marriage. When we read of ancient Israel's infidelity ...committing idolary, it was analogous to a wife who committed adultery.

A marriage based on the principles of the bible is the foundation for producing and training children. Throughout the bible God continues to tell married couples to remain faithful. ADULTERY destroys and make marriage lose its meaning. All marriage have their ups and downs.. but when we recognise that we are all human, we will try to forgive each other if we do something that is wrong. Many opt today to have a relationship and live with the person without marrying, but I believe that institution of marriage will always be something that will show Christ's love for his church and something that as humans we will want to emulate.

Ideally, yes. But what if two people are foolish? Are we to force them to stay together, even if a divorce and remarriage would be best for all concerned?

What if a woman marries an abusive husband? Are we to force her to stay with him, til the day he beats her to death? If she runs away, are we to punish her for abandoning her wedding vows?

What if someone is forced into marriage?

marriage is something that predates all of the religions, yet they all consistently try and claim ownership of it, and push their view of what marriage should be on people outside of their religion.

As if anyone outside that religion should care what that particular religions holy books or preachers say, lol.

As an aside, I have yet to hear one single logically sound argument that would stop same sex marriage, yet also allow atheist marriage. However much of a sin homosexuality is considered to be by a religion, atheism is usually considered worse, lol.

Marriage is...a lot of things to a lot of people.

At its core, though, it's two* adult people, making a decision of their own free will* on the basis of mutual love for each other* to spend the rest of their lives together whatever may come to pass - for better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health. Often the commitment will be marked by some form of ceremony - possibly either religious or civic in nature - in front of their friends, their families, and any deities in whom they believe.

And the really exciting bit is living out the reality of that decision to spend their lives together. My wife and I have been together nearly three years now, and it's marvellous.

Yeah . .. . you care to support the statement? What anthropological evidence supports marriage predating religion? Wouldn't it be more accurate to say every religion has marriage protocols with the same consistency that they have creation myths and speculations of afterlife?

Um yeah, my point exactly. Enforcing some religion's views while banning others is a first amendment violation in the US. Clearly all religions have a right to promote their concepts of marriage.

Er, what? Okay, how about this: If all religions were allowed to promote their understandings of marriage equally, certain flavors of Baptists and Catholics might "stop" same sex marriage in their denomination while atheists would be free to marry. Problem solved, logically sound argument stopping same sex marriage while allowing atheist marriage. Of course people seeking same sex marriage could go to a denomination that supports it and have a valid marriage. . . . that is what 1st amendment rights are supposed to assure, that people of all religions can pursue their religious ceremonies without State confirming or denying some over others.
