• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. I just read an article on yahoo about 'gaslighting' My dad says it is lying. It was described as 'emotional abuse. Lying, fibbing, slander, libel, kidding, johing, there are so many words for lying! I would be very upset if someone lied about me. Don't make up rumors and lies! I had no idea what it was, now my dad says its lying. Every since that serpent, lying old slimy snake entered the garden, people have not only falling for lies they learn to lie themselves. So sad, so many people are afraid of the truth!

Gaslighting is convincing a person that something is true even though it isn't. Soon the person believes it and to them it becomes truth. It comes from the old movie Gaslight.

Gaslighting goes far beyond simply lying. It is when you go to great extremes to make someone believe things that are not true, in the process you manipulate their thoughts and emotions.

Your dad's technically right; it is lying, but it's a specific type of psychological manipulation. The tactic is used to distort the victim's sense of reality, in order to transfer guilt from the offender to the victim. It's very common in abusive relationships.

For example: Parent leaves black and blue marks on child. Child can see the bruises. Child remembers parent hitting them. Parent tells the child. "No dear, we didn't hit you. You fell down the stairs." That's an example of gas lighting.

Gas lighting can be very insidious and hard to spot. We're constantly subjected to it in one form or another.

It sounds like what Donald Trump does to his voters and fans. Desantis also does the same thing to his voters and followers. Yeah, Trump and other slimy republican politicians are gaslighters!
