• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

What has worked for you?
In order to overcome your drinking problems, what sort of treatment methods did you use/are you using?

I had to quit, plain and simple or I would die. Not just a cliche but the doc told me that. Being a full on alcoholic, I had to make up my mind not drink the rest of my life and then change the mindset about it as well as my habits. Go to meetings, read the Big Book of AA, work my personal program, do the steps which are a very effective tool to help me in my sobriety.

I had spent a month in rebab back in Dec '99 - Jan '00 but within a day after I got out, I was back to drinking and using. Looking back, the reason why I "stopped" then was not for me but for everyone else. I have been clean now over 3 yrs and sober for over 2. Longest I have gone without and I attribute it to I had to change for me, no one else.

Yeah, my biggest thing was a change in mindset. Changing my habits to find other more productive ways of spending my time. I saw a shrink for a bit, which helped me figure out how to deal with the stressors that lead to my drinking, and that really helped too. But other than that, it's been willpower and support from my wife. I've heard lots about AA, but that was definitely not an option for me. So I'm curious to see what works for others.
