So far, these are the first truly great books mentioned in this thread. Yes. I've read the Pilgrim books, but not the Philokalia. I took the warnings in the Pilgrim books seriously, and have not yet found a spiritual director familiar with the latter.

I havent read them but hear great things. Its a fantasy work by CS Lewis. Its Christian Based.

How about The Iliad, The Divine Comedy, Don Quixote, Revelations (aka Showings), Hamlet, Macbeth, Interior Castle, Paradise Lost, Walden, The Brothers Karamazov, Notes from the Underground, Huckleberry Finn, The Grapes of Wrath, 1984, The Lord of the Rings, The Gulag Archipelago, etc.

I thought these were among the Great Books. How come nobody has mentioned any of them?

I have several of those as e-books, but most aren't "religious" as the OP stated he was looking for. And the one's that are, well, they are of a Catholic bent, so I wouldn't classify them as great in a religious manner. And LotR, is fiction, non-fiction being the OP's intention, as was my understanding.

I will get to read The Iliad next semester , I own Interior Castle, but it is on my "to read list." I really hope I get to read The Divine Comedy and Paradise Lost one day especially the former!

I have to read The Lord of the Rings next semester as well . I am not looking forward to that because I get bored with fantasy. 1984 I had to read in high school and hated it.

What is The Gulag Archipeligo it sounds interesting.

How many on here has read The Purpose Driven Life? I have that book but I haven't gotten around to reading it. The TNIV Bible sounds good too. I'm also somewhat interested in some reading material by Joel Osteen.

Yes. While it's on a lot of lists of great books, I omitted this one, as well as The Art of War from mine, simply because I mostly picked books I liked, not just ones I had read that are great. I do think an educated person should read both, however.

I can't believe I mentioned Interior Castle and forgot The Dark Night of the Soul! Shame on me for that.

I'm reading a few books right now...

Case For Christ - Lee Strobel
Mere Christianity - C.S. Lewis
Imitation of Christ - Thomas a Kempis
Confessions of a Sinner - Saint Augustine

I've been reading a chapter of "The Imitation of Christ" each night, and I only bought "Confessions of a Sinner" today, but I think that one is going to be a chapter per night as well, along with my bible readings and prayer time. They are both great books where you can really meditate on what is written. As for "The Case For Christ", I've been reading and taking notes of that one during my free time at school, and "Mere Christianity" is my bus book. I've got to have something to read at all times!

I've heard wonderful things about John Owen (puritan right?). Have you read any of his other works? Where might I get a hold of Mortification of Sin? I've never come across any of his works.

Yes, John Owen (1616-1683) was one of the leading English Puritans. Many of his works are published in the Puritan Paperbacks series from Grace and Truth Books. There's also several online bookstores which carry the Puritan Paperbacks.
