The way you tell what is a metaphor is to study, pray, use common sense and some interpretive skills.

Not eveyone will come up with the same interpretation, but that is nothing new. Even those who insist on reading entirely literally come up with different interpretations of many Scriptures. So much for "the truth interpretation is obvious from a plain reading"!
