The thing about manifestations of the Spirit, whether they are true or false, is that Jesus demonstrated during His ministry all sorts of ways that He healed and ministered to people. Thinking about this I have come to the conclusion that there are manifestations that are engineered and encouraged by preachers, or by the people themselves in the belief that they are more spiritual if they have them. These are ones that I would consider to be of the flesh. I am not prepared to say that any are of the devil without being there to see the manifestation and to hear what the Holy Spirit says to me about it.
But there are manifestations that happen to genuine Christian believers that are not solicited either by the preacher, the person, or anyone else. These are spontaneous manifestations that happen as the person is genuinely worshiping God, or is being ministered to.
Unusual things often happen when a person in bondage is being released. Weeping and laughter may happen as the release comes. Often there are quite dramatic manifestations when people are delivered from demons. These are not the Holy Spirit, but the reaction of the demons as they are cast out. This often happened during the ministry of Jesus. Once we understand about these things, we are not so spooked out about them.
Any manifestation that is of the Holy Spirit follows along the line of the fruit of the Spirit as specified in Galatians, or the attributes of love in 1 Corinthians 13.
When a person is being delivered of a demon, the manifestation can be quite scary, sometimes in the form of screaming, falling down, writhing on the floor and foaming at the mouth. Sometimes, similar manifestations can happen when a person in bondage comes into an environment where the Holy Spirit is moving, and can be mistaken for that of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it takes a person with the gift of discernment of spirits to know the difference. Take the girl who followed Paul saying that these are men who are the servants of the most high God and people should listen to them. Paul discerned that this was not the Holy Spirit talking and cast the demon out of her. The girl was speaking the truth, correctly identifying Paul as the servant of God and that people should listen to him. What was happening was that the girl was exalting Paul over Jesus, and the Holy Spirit's role is to exalt Jesus over and above His ministers.
Now, as I think about it, this is interesting, because we have all sorts of ministries that are exalting themselves with big pictures of the preachers all over the place, and people going to the meetings to hear the preacher, and whom they would not go and hear a relatively unknown preacher who may be exalting the Name of Jesus more than the big name fellow. I wonder if it is the same spirit that exalts the big name fellows, that was exalting Paul? That is, the one Paul recognised as a demon which he cast out of the girl?
Makes you think, doesn't it?
