Is this a rarity, or is it pretty common? When we were at service yesterday I noticed that the Book of Service had a section in the settings for if there wasn't communion, but the church we have been attending has it every week. So just figured I'd find out whats up on this.

Before I answer this, do you like the idea of weekly communion?

Our church ofers communion every week, but it alternates between the two services. So one week the 8:30 service takes communion, and the next week the 10:30 service does.

I come from a tradition that only had communion once a quarter. I much prefer having it weekly (or bi-weekly, if I must).

The historical practice of celebrating the Lord's Supper has been every worship service on every Sunday up to the 1600's. Once Enlightenment and rationalism began invading the churches, then the LS was relegated to less often ("What so special about it?"). Of course, Reformed influence fit within this view ("it is a memorial only..."). Sadly Lutherans followed the trends rather than the historic practices.

I'm glad to see the Lutheran Church move in this weekly direction, done by teaching and urging, not by sole decision of the pastor. As Luther wrote, let the laymen bang the door down beggin for the LS. At every congregation I served, just by teaching Bible study, over a period of two years, the people were asking "Why can't we have the LS every worship service?". My response was: "we can." People truly appreciated it. The only complaints came from a few who were worried that the budget would increase for the additional wine.... hmmm.

In Christ's love,

Oh, it in no way bothers me. I was just curious from what I had seen in the book of service. I'm wondering whether there will be communion at the Day of Ascension service. We're making out first potluck at the church

My congregation offers communion almost every week, but not every service. 1st and 3rd Sundays it's at the 8:00 service and at the 6:00 Saturday service the night before, and at the 10:30 service 2nd and 4th Sundays. No communion if there is a 5th Sunday in the month. We don't always have a Saturday evening service--sometimes it gets bumped due to weddings. This is a change within the last year or two. Used to be only at the 1st Sunday at 8:00 and 2nd Sunday at 10:30.

You can bet that the apostles had weekly communion!!! (If not MORE often, and yes, with REAL wine. Jesus didn't have TWO cups, only the 1). Oh gee, what if one of the disciples was an alcoholic!!?! And here Jesus gave them wine. But, like its written:

Mat 11:19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children.

Nothing that enters the mouth can defile you. Nothing.

Mat 15:11 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man.
