  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

hmmmmm tithe of grain, oil and wine..... not only that, God granted permission for the COI to turn their tithe into money and buy whatever they wanted, including wine and STRONG drink, and party.....

They didn't know how to distill beverages into strong drink till long after the NT period.

"Some scholars believe distilled spirits were first produced between the 8th century AD and 9th century AD in the Middle East[4] with the art of distillation being brought to Ireland and Britain by Christian monks. It is a popular legend that St. Patrick introduced distillation to Ireland and Scotland, but he lived too early for that to be possible. It is, however, possible that the distillation process was discovered in Ireland and possibly Britain (either independently or in precursor to Arabian distillation) by farmers as a way of making use of excess grain after harvest."

Check the Hebrew and I believe you'll find that they are talking about a sugary drink made from figs, etc..

This tells us nothing except they probably didn't have what we commonly call "strong drink" today, which is distilled liquor. So their "strong drink" wasn't quite as high in alcohol content as we can get today.

We know they had intoxicating beverages long before this decree was made. Do you have any documentation saying "wine" and "strong drink" were not what seems to be obviously alcoholic drinks to the casual reader?
Thanks, Ricker

Foolish suggestion. Spirits are not Wine and one can become just as drunk off one as the other. I know I've had my share of both.

"For these are not drunken, as ye suppose seeing as it is but the third hour of the day". Acts 2,15

"And he drank of the wine and he was "DRUNKEN" and he was uncovered in his tent." Gen 9,21

I don't care how much grape juice you hammer down, you can't get drunk off it.

As for people in the Bible getting DRUNK off stuff other then wine.

"Do not drink wine OR OTHER STRONG DRINK, thou or thy sons with thee when you go into the tabernacle." Lev 10,9

OOOh, good one Pythons! This shows strong drink probably wasn't just "a sugary drink made from figs". Again I don't mind anyone preaching of alcohol's ill effects, but I am tired of some Adventists who try to twist and manipulate the Bible to try to make it say something it doesn't, or not say something it does.
God bless! Ricker

Conklin and I had a lengthy debate on this subject several months ago. Here is an excerpt from one of my posts (edited slightly due to current post-size limitations) in that other thread, and many other points were addressed in the surrounding posts as well:
I don't have time to get into another long debate on the subject right now, but the earlier posts are there if anyone wants to read them. Just be aware that that thread is still in the Traditional Adventist forum, so if anyone has any further comments on that thread, they should probably be made here.

This would seem to prohibit drinking alcohol prior to attending worship or sacrificial duties (or services) in the temple (or tabernacle) -- in other words don't drink and then attend church. It does not seem to prohibit drinking (alcohol) at other times though.
