• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

in high school I often had the thought that I was about to throw up. recently i went to a restaurant and after the meal (I believe I had overeaten) I felt like I was going to throw up so I went to the bathroom and went threw a long ordeal of gagging and working against my body to finally throw up. Its like a thought triggers me to start gagging until I throw up.

tonight I was with freinds at another restaurant and I had the same thought. I was waiting outside on the girl that just broke my heart and I gave her a hug and then said I think im going to throw up and then I ended up gagging and eventually throwing up right there in front of her . I know that it is completely in my head because its like I have to work against my body to force myself to throw up. Once I start gagging I cant stop until I have thrown up.

Its definently not anxiety or anything like that and its so weird. im afraid my freinds might think I keep doing it to get attention which im not.

they dont. i wasnt embarressed or anything. i just was wondering if there might be an OCD connection. I also had my wisdom teeth bothering me those few days so one of my freinds wrote it off as having to do with that.

OCD is so weird - in my "brain lock" book he said if it MIGHT be OCD it IS OCD. So I have pretty much taken that as my mantra. My symptoms vary literally daily. I am sorry that you go through this. Even those very close to us cannot understand how it is and to try to explain gets me no where, even though most people in my life are supportive. I am praying for you.... Kim

My thought is your stomach may stay tense & upset as you deal with the OCD. So any added stress or physical illness like having your wisdom teeth taken out, &/or the meds involved may have caused the vomiting.

I know stress keeps my stomach feeling tense. Also migraines can cause stomach upset & with the two together I sometimes feel sick. When I was younger & living a more public life I did vomit on occasion when I had bad migraines. Thank the Lord for pain medication which has helped.

Said a prayer for you...So sorry you're dealing with this.

Hi OP
I'm so sorry that happened to you as I know if it were me that would certainly give my OCD something to chew on for awhile. I really have no certainty as to what caused the vomiting whether OCD thinking or not but the important thing is to try very hard not to dwell on it or else the vomiting won't be the issue but the obsessing about it will.
As long as you are able to just brush it off and get on with life that's good. If it happens again you should probably also get an "all clear" statement from a Dr. who can rule out any medical condition that would cause it.
Bummer - though - really!!

Wow.

I have OCD and I also have a lifelong fear of ANYTHING that can make me throw up (I've had long battles with this but have come a long way). My whole thing is that I would be terrified that I was going to get sick or get the stomach flu or throw up in a restaurant, and then I'd have something like a panic episode about it. I never -actually- threw up in these situations, but the fear caused me some serious distress. To me, your situation definitely sounds like OCD. I think the road gets a little bit easier when you truly realize these things are in your head and you are in control of them (however strongly you might feel otherwise). But, I'm sorry. I know my OCD and hypochondria have been strongly linked and very troublesome for most of my life, but I'm happy to say that I am at a point where most of my life is lived without fear. (Panic does come up, but I'm not always convinced that I'm DYING or if I put my left foot on a crack, I'm going to throw up.) So, good luck! There are places and people out there to help you with controlling mental inclinations and helping you to understand what's really happening.

its getting better. the other day I watched a commedy spoof on YouTube called "waiters nauseated by food" where they had to read off a menu and fight the inclination to spew. the next day I was with a bible study group at a hybachi bar. I felt so much like them as the guy was cooking the food right infront of us. I could not get that comedy spoof out of my head and I was very anxiuos and trying not to look at the food being cooked. If I do not get distracted it gets worse especially when a conversation just gets idle because it leaves so much mental capacity for thinking entirely on it.

Panick attacks go hand-in-hand with OCD. I think it sounds like you are having a panick attack. My sister vomits when she has a panick attack....when I have a panick attack, my chest hurts, i see spots, sometimes I pass out or sweat and hyperventillate. I just downright shut down. Vomiting is a very common side effect of panick attacks. Maybe you should look into it... also, have you ever considered meds for your OCD? I take meds. I feel like God led me to taking them. I love my meds.
