I just got my second Windows 10 PC last week and they are both running fine; there are a lot of features to 10 that I like; to numerous to list here (I have another thread here). The only real down side of Win10 is Edge browser; but a lownload and install of Slimjet with ad blocker will fix that. If you up-grade now; when you buy your next PC (unless you jump ship and go for Linux or Mac) you will be ready for it. And daily security up-grades are the only way to keep ahead of the malware pirates.

If that was true, there wouldn't be such a proliferation of anti-virus/malware/etc etc applications.

While it is true that malware is a major problem that seems to not be resolving, refusing to do updates because they don't seem to do anything to stop them is just silly. You're far better off to do the updates and upgrades where feasible than run software that's end of life (e.g. Windows XP). For instance, when UAC was introduced in Windows Vista it protected Windows a lot from viruses as users had to consent to running the program. Yes, UAC is annoying, and yes it's not perfect, but that is one tangible example of an OS upgrade assisting in reducing virus execution.

EDIT: I seem to have misread your post, sorry. The point still stands that OS security updates are important, as are third party antivirus programs. While Microsoft aren't that great with the whole antivirus thing, their security features in Windows still add a reasonable amount of protection.

Upgrading to 10 from 8 is a sensible move as it restores the start menu (but if you like the start screen that much you can set the view to be that way), gives several new features (particularly in making metro apps more usable) and is generally more stable.

Upgrading from 7 I can understand the hesitancy, but for most end users it's worth doing so you're at least up to date (Windows 7 support ends in 2020).

That's more to do with advertising and the AV companies making you feel you NEED their product; especially free scanners, not long ago McAfee; along with others, was doing scans more to see if your PC had anti-virus programs and constantly telling you that you needed to buy their up-grade version.

I'm not suggesting not doing SECURITY updates, but other updates may be unneeded if even inadvisable and just eat up space. And oh btw they FORCE them on you now, no getting to choose (hello Big Brother), which is ludicrous. Of course MS has long been the leader of the pack in forcing things on people vs giving them a choice (short of opting for a new OS that is, which I'm close to). But I think that to "upgrade" to 10 because you'll get updates longer is not enough reason in itself. I know people on XP who are doing just fine.

Since I don't do "metro apps," moot point...I guess if that's a big deal to some and they are improved as you say, then maybe it's a compelling reason.

Disagree. At least I haven't heard or experienced any real stability problems with 8, and certainly not with 7. And really I think the jury is still out on how stable 10 is anyway.

Meanwhile they eliminated media player (??), collect tons of info on you/your usage whether you want them to or not...the list goes on. No thanks.

Let's face it, they made and continue to make a very stupid (and egotistical) mistake by trying to have this "one size fits all" OS. It doesn't. Win 8 on out should have been a separate OS for cell phones/etc and let 7 continue on it's merry PC path.

Sorry, no. McAfee is a poor AV and poor example. In fact, many of the best ones (AVG, Malwarebytes etc) have free versions and they don't bug me to buy anything. Only a fool would run Windows without some kind of AV/malware program running (unless perhaps you're one seriously insulated user who never, ever downloads stuff, visits new sites, etc...and that's an extremely small minority).

My tech guy says that if you have Windows 7, as I do, then stay with it. He hates Windows 8 and recommends Windows 10 for them. When I spoke to him a week ago he said that 7 would be supported for another 5 years.

Didn't like 8 at all, but I do like 8.1, which was a humble pie retrenchment for MS and a win for the user. I actually like it better than 7, but when it messes up it often messes up big time. 10 I would not use.

The "spying" that MS does is not your info. Rather, it is how your machine behaves. You buy their softwares. So, they have no reason to spy on you. On the other hand, you are the product when you use Facebook for free. Your info is the thing that FB sells. And I'd much rather trust my info with MS than FB, for other various reasons. Read the following book. If you still use FB that's your call.

Windows 10 is a better road to take because it provides more features, more security, and is just an overall advancements than the other Windows operating systems.

Been prompted to upgrade for several weeks now. Yesterday succumbed. Used custom install to disable info sharing. Took about an hour.

Had to reinstall printer and CCleaner but apart from that OK.

Used Cortana - asked it what are the 39 steps. Came back with something about dating sites?

I am certainly not pushing people to keep sharing of info abled, but I'm amazed how people are willing to share their lives with facebook, but not Microsoft. There typical response back to me is, "I can turn off sharing of info". FYI, that's to other people. Facebook gets every bit of info about you. You post your entire life to facebook and that's all theirs to use. But its really cool if people don't want to turn that on. It just means a bit more extra work to some extent to keep up with information that might be handy for your day to day life.....but honestly not much more. Google probably at this point does far more for you. I'm just a Microsoft fanboy.

Actually, Microsoft doesn't do very much with your data. Google and Facebook do because that is how they make their money. Microsoft doesn't make their money that way. So I must ask: what credible source can you provide that I haven't seen that outright proves Microsoft is harvestly data about people that you believe will harm a person?
