  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

One, is there a place where I can get ahold of the Westminster Catechism for my Dad? Laid out in a question answer sort of a format with Scripture references? He had been studying with the Jehovah's Witnesses and using their Reasoning from the Scriptures book, but now I think the whole false prophecy thing is starting to weigh on him. He has started talking with the pastor and the family ministers at the church where my brother and I go to youth group. The pastor gave him a copy of Luther's Shorter Catechism with Explanation. He's shown an interest in doing broad studies to gain a wider perspective, so I figured I might as well try to get ahold of one. I've never read it myself. I only know the basics of Reformed theology.

Two, does anyone know if there's a reliable Bible translation that doesn't render YHWH as "LORD" but just leaves it as is in the OT (and, preferrably, doesn't transliterate the name Jehovah or Yahweh)?

God bless all,

Lissa

Question #1: If you'd like a for-real-physical-book to actually put in your Dads' hands (as opposed to on-line resources), try The Westminster Shorter Catechism for Study Classes by G. I. Williamson (ISBN 0-87552-521-0). Great resource!!

Williamson also has a great study guide for the entire Westminster Confession of Faith (ISBN 0-87552-593-8). It's not the question-answer format of the Shorter Catechism, but it does give a section-by-section breakdown of the entire Westminster Confession, and it does have questions at the end of every chapter. It might be worthwhile for you to check out as well.

Don't have an answer for question #2. Sorry.
