I am trying to help a friend who is looking for a church to attend. I want to tell him correctly what baptist believe. I only know a little bit, since I am a life-long Lutheran (yes, by choice and agreements with theology now).

1) What is the baptist stance on baptism? They say you have to be immersed, right? Also, baptsits do not baptize infants, right? Do they believe in an "age of accountability"? Is baptism purely symbolic or is there any other significance?

2) In a baptist church, is Holy Communion only purely symbolic?

3) What about salvation? Do baptists preach of only salvation by grace through faith or is there work to be done on the believers part?

4) What about the Holy Trinity? Do they preach of God being one being made of three parts - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit but where the Father is not the Son and not the Spirit and the Son is not the Spirit and yet all are one?

5) How do "works" play into baptist theology? Is it purely like Lutherans that faith will produce works or is it different?

6) Any other significant things I should know about the denomination?

Bridget,

1. Baptism is a symbolic act of obeidence to Jesus Christ, and it is done by immersion only. You are correct that Baptists do not practice infant baptism, and once you become a believer then you are baptised (i.e "believers' baptism"). The Baptist Faith and Message put out by the Southern Baptist Convention has this to say about baptism:
The Lord's Supper is a symbolic act of obedience whereby members of the church, through partaking of the bread and the fruit of the vine, memorialize the death of the Redeemer and anticipate His second coming.
2. Most Baptists see communion as only symbolic-see above for the SBC stance.

3. All mainline Protestant denominations (that I can think of) adhere to sola fide (meaning "faith alone")-that man is saved by grace through faith alone. Here is what the Baptist Faith and Message states on salvation and grace:

4) What about the Holy Trinity? Do they preach of God being one being made of three parts - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit but where the Father is not the Son and not the Spirit and the Son is not the Spirit and yet all are one?

The Baptist Faith and Message states:

5. A person's faith will produce works.

6. Any other significant things I should know about the denomination?

Yeah, there are a variety of baptist associations and conferences.

Hope that answers your questions.

In addition to what has been posted, you can also check out the Articles of Faith of the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (GARBC):

http://www.garbc.org/artfaith.php

You will see by comparing these statements with those of the Southern Baptists that there is strong agreement among baptists. Each group is a little different here and there, but overall the doctrine is very cohesive.

For the SBC's full Baptist Faith & Message go to:
