  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Trouble with Hannity...again.

Is christianity a religion of orthopraxis or orthodoxy? What is enforced as orthodoxy are frequently abstract difficult to understand concepts that people ascent to, just to go along with the crowd.

Jesus said we will be judged by our works, not our thoughts. Did you feed Me when I was hungry, clothe Me when I was naked, or visit Me when I was sick?

Orthodoxy stands or falls on its own, it does not need the help of coercive enforcement, and if it does, it is no longer orthodoxy but tyranny

Yet we are talking about Mr. Hannity using his "bully pulpit" to tell questioning folks that Mormonism is Christianity. Then when proseltyzing Mormon Missionaries show up, they claim that since they are Christians, (although they teach doctrines completely at odds with Christian doctrine) the person is not losing the faith should they "join up". The person ends up confused. Honesty is not served.

I don't think so.

Heresy? Yes.

Christians? No.

They are like Muslims in way, heresy derived out of the christian faith, but not christians.

nope, because they aren't Christian due to their invalid baptism. You have to be Christian first, in order to be a Christian heretic.

I've not seen one post in this entire thread that says anything remotely encouraging about ministering to Mormons and reaching out to them. If they are so wrong, "heretical", disordered...where then is the grace to reach them and convert them??

I have many crosses to carry. But false comfort and hubris about my "brand of Christianity" does not cause me to spout out who is "acceptable to practice" Christianity and who is not.

geocajun did a huge thread in the past on the times he met with Mormons and he invited them into his home and shared his faith with them. I've done the same when they come to my door.

This thread is a discussion about the differences of doctrine. It doesn't necessarily need to be a venue where Mormons are reached out to.

There was a poster in this thread, for instance, who clearly lacked the understanding of what Baptism is/does. She indicated that she thought all that was necessary for Christian life was accepting Jesus as personal Lord and Savior. This thread has been informational, and now she has been provided with the knowledge of what Baptism is. So this thread, while maybe it's not a Mormon evangelism tool, has served a purpose.

And simultaneously, several of us have and do show the love of Christ to Mormons, in our daily real lives.

If one is a regular in OBOB, then one knows these things. If one rolls through occasionally, looking only to find fault with the participants in OBOB, then one does not know these things, but is instead casting empty judgements.

I am touched by Michelle's post and would even say it helps me glimpse the "City of God". I apologize to geocajun, Miss Shelby and others that have reached out to Mormons. I was selfish to think of myself doing so as compared to others. I engage them almost daily outside of my hospital as they seek converts in the summer. I make sure I bring a sack lunch.

I try to see Jesus in others regardless of their disordered thinking or distance from God. It hurts to hear that individuals are called not Christian or are not allowed to call themselves Christian. But Michelle's post helps me in a contextual and reflective way.
