After I was saved, I became disgruntled with life, and returned to a sin I had before I was a Christian. This resulted in around 10 years of wandering through a wilderness of curses. I believed in my heart that my sin was unpardonable, and lived in daily terror of hell. It was only after some time that God rescued me from my life of pointlessness and restored me to obedience. I now once again have a full life blessed by God.
But God has a reason for these troubled times.
In the 26th Book of Leviticus, we see God’s ever-extended mercy. It starts with saying the blessings that come through obedience. Then lists the curses that come through disobedience. But the interesting thing is the number of times God says, "But if you consider your way, confess your guilt and return to God, He will pardon". He initially only sends trouble to help restore us to obedience. He does not delight in our death.
Lev 26:18 'And after all this, if you do not obey Me, then I will punish you seven times more for your sins.
Lev 26:21 'Then, if you walk contrary to Me, and are not willing to obey Me, I will bring on you seven times more plagues, according to your sins.
Lev 26:23 'And if by these things you are not reformed by Me, but walk contrary to Me,
Lev 26:27-28 'And after all this, if you do not obey Me, but walk contrary to Me, then I also will walk contrary to you in fury; and I, even I, will chastise you seven times for your sins.
Lev 26:40-42 'But if they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness in which they were unfaithful to Me, and that they also have walked contrary to Me, and that I also have walked contrary to them and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if their uncircumcised hearts are humbled, and they accept their guilt— then I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac and My covenant with Abraham I will remember; I will remember the land.
