Because there Jesus said "That they may be ONE as WE are ONE". Which gets to your point "three distinct members" in the case of the Godhead, and in vs 11 we see that the distinct members of the disciples are to "be one" just as the distinct member of the Godhead are one.

IT is easy to see that the disciples were called to be "one" as in being in "unity" and of one accord... and certainly not called to be "one being". So also the Godhead as 3 persons is One - being in unity - but still 3 persons -- not "one person"

So this is me just emphasizing the same point you made and expanding on it a bit.
