Nothing !

For the younger ones who are now in their 20s, it's educational debt and whining about pronouns. Actually, that's true of some of the older ones, too.

Anecdotally, the older millennials tend to be more into more into new age atheism and socialism, the younger ones tend to be more into LGBT and feminism issues.

Gen Z is comparatively conservative. At least in a vacuum for their age.
Not sure why.

We are pretty cool.

What I recall about being a millennial was hearing about older people complain about us (and me receiving that label) when I had just barely started working in high school.

At the time I was pretty apolitical and just played a lot of video games in solitude. I was a little confused why I was being hated so much when I didn't think I was much different from anyone else.

An extremely misunderstood generation. Lot of educational debt and even though some jobs might pay $11 an hour, that $11 an hour doesn't go very far. A lot of us were probably in middle school or junior high on 9/11 and just saw the world go downhill ever since. We were probably the last ones in school to use a real chalkboard (I remember when my Catholic school go their first white board - the other teachers were jealous) and we lived through technology changing from cassette tapes to CDs to MP3s; VHS tapes to DVDs to digital downloads and streaming.

We were graduating high school, or going to soon, when the Recession of 2008 hit, so we tend of have a generally pessimistic view of the future after having seen 9/11 as kids, graduated during the Recession, and believed the lie that a college degree will guarantee you a good paying job; however, a fair amount of us have gotten into technical trades or the military (but not for patriotic reasons). Trust me, after eight years in, 98% of people join the military for the benefits whether its educational, medical, or a retirement after twenty years.

Oh and God help you if you have a financial emergency because it just might make you homeless. And all this time, the Boomers will blame us for their precious name brand name places collapsing because we're too poor to buy a $3000 engagement ring (jokes on them, the fiancee doesn't care about the cost and her's was about $400). Gen Xers aren't too bad, but really both they and the Boomers need to start blaming Gen Z instead.

I was already a legal adult well out of high school by the time 9/11 happened (19 years old), and graduating college (an quite a bit later than most, at that) when the 2008-2009 recession hit. Dang.

One thing I've observed about my generation (I was born 1987) is there is no unifying factor. The hippies had music and the cultural revolution of the 60's and generation x had self-loathing and a general feeling of uselessness mixed with angst (teenage or other..) to relate on.. We on the other hand have had alot of unfortunate events happen in our youth which make us Leary of the world around us and a bit paranoid.. from the horrific Columbine incident to 9/11 and the destruction of the twin towers there has been a lot of negativity surrounding and pervading our worldview as we began to develop. One thing I'll add to this observation is the advent of the internet.. that, I feel, has also led to lots of confusion and chaos as to an understanding of where one might fit in, and our overall place in society..

I think there are unifying factors to our generation but they aren't positive... Certainly not something Christians would be fond of.

Millennials were the first to go full speed into technology as it stands today.... With that being said, much of the media mischaracterizes us. They think we are dumb and know nothing prior to today's tech and that would be Gen Z. I am a millennial but I grew up with records, cassette tapes, VHS, a Sony Walkman, a home phone with a cord, dial up internet, beepers, playing outside, X Games being the biggest sporting event on TV (I watched Tony Hawk do the first 900 live in 1999 I believe it was) and so on. I remember waiting in line at a record store for a new release or going inside to listen to vinyl on the store headphones to see if I'd like the record. The issue, #1 is this forum also mislabels us. Millennials according to the census is 1980 to 1994. I will also say this. Someone born in 1980 will be a world apart from someone born in 1994. I was born in 1989, my younger brother in 1995. I grew up on video games where you had to be in the same room. Playstation, N64, Game Cube, Nintendo, Sega Dreamcast... He grew up with online systems like Xbox live, PS3 and so on.

As far as the internet goes, I remember AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) and the loads of chat rooms everyone said to stay away from lol..

Myspace came along and then all of the others. We are the first generation to access porn online. You no longer needed to buy DVDs or magazines to have it and that changed A LOT with our generation from the last. Countless articles suggest millennials are less active at doing "you know what" with others than Gen X was and porn is probably the reason why.

To put it in short, millennials are really the first that embraced a world of artificial pleasures compared to the real versions (food, sex, family), fantasy worlds (virtual reality, virtual player games, pleasing your social media audience while drowning in debt, self hate and depression), independence (not getting married, not having kids, being self employed or not staying in the same job very long), and the list goes on.

Well said, brother.. and good points about "unifying factors".. I had to throw that in there because that was a way I felt. You reiterated my point very well and maybe even summed up the feeling better than I could. I, for one, have definitely felt a lack of connection with my fellow man, for better or for worse.. that feeling hasn't subsided to this day.

Also, remember Tony Hawk landing the 900 .. I was a big skateboarder, though I didn't watch it on tv, I saw it afterwards.. and it is awesome ha

I remember sometime around 2008-ish.. when cd's really started to hit the decline and not be people's main source of music consumption. It was and still is sad to me as I also loved waiting for the album to come out and listening to it in it's entirety as the artist intended it to be.

Ultimately, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to analyze and observe history up until this point. We see the previous generations developing technologies that would (and have) further created a lack of real connection with one another, and that, I believe, is the cross us millenials have had to bear harder than any previous generation. We can either choose to stay stuck in the past or begin to appreciate what we have as brothers in Christ. I live at Home with my Mother and loneliness has forced me to not only get along with her but also understand her a bit better. Going to church helps too and with Jesus as my peacemaker I'm able to stay stable and sane in these insane times we're living in at the moment (covid, rioting, natural disasters, and foreign nations ready to attack the U.S. at any time).. all things aside, I feel we're living in the end and Jesus is coming VERY soon.. so amen to that !!

I'd say trying to be carefree, yet having a lot of stuff to worry about. Maybe even a certain perception of hopelessness in the present and the future, trying to fight for change in things that are really difficult to change. Loss of faith, hedonism, and the "disconnecting connection" of social media.
