I thought I was a budding Reliant K and Switchfoot fan. My friend got me the Mmhmm album for my birthday and I was hooked. I thought that was one of the best albums (I almost like all of their songs in that CD)...until a twist of fate...

I heard of Thrice. I thought they were okay when I hear their song Stare at the Sun...some 300 times. A good song. But when I started to listen to their songs and read their lyrics...

...I was speechless...

My old loves still sound okay, but Thrice completely won my heart (musically speaking). The fact they are a secular band makes me love them more. I mean, with their powerful, positive influence and rocking beats, it just reaches out to more people.

Artist in the Ambulance, I would have to say is one of their best albums. I actually love all of their songs on there (of course, I favor some of them more). If you want a taste of Thrice, I highly recommend this album.

Songs like "Cold Cash and Colder Hearts" and "Artist in the Ambulance" are just awesome songs. Yes, it is true that the influence of C.S. Lewis penetrates this band as you can see in their song "The Abolition of Man."

If you like rock, you gotta like Thrice.

I don't want to get into the argument whether they are a "Christian band" or not. If they could bring such a good influence to their audience, that's all it really matters.

Vheissu wasn't a bad album at all. It was the first album I brought. I ran into an old friend at Target and recommended this CD (this was when I was only listening to Stare at the Sun over and over...). I decided to take the leap to buying it with the claim that it's "faith-based." The CD is really nice and lovely. Although Thrice is awesome when they rock hard like in the album Artist in the Ambulance, it's nice to fall back to something nice and soft in Vheissu.

Yea, a handful of fans dislike the latest album because it's too "emo" and "soft." But it's nice to see Thrice experimenting with new styles. I think "Image of the Invisible" rocks solid!

ANyone heard the Identity Crisis CD or any previous albums?

Yeah, I really like Vheissu, but I think AITA is a better album overall. I wouldn't call it emo at all though. I really want to get Illusion Of Safety, I've heard it's really hard and not as well produced. But from the clips I've heard, it sounds pretty good.

What do you mean by "not as well produced"? The production values sound fine to me.

Yes, it is their heaviest album, but it's still quite diverse, probably their most diverse album. For example, the most "emo" track comes right after arguable the album's heaviest song ("A Subtle Dagger"). The lyrics are fairly Christian influenced, as much if not more than on Vheissu. THe 30 second samples you can find on the internet and/or iTunes should give you a decent idea of what the CD sounds like.

Identity Crisis has a fairly strong Southern Californian punk/hardcore influence, and some eo as well. There was a CD before that called "First Impressions", but it holds little value except for being very rare (there was a site where you could stream the whole album, but I can't find it anymore. The Illusion of Safety had influences from metal, rock, hardcore, and emo, and was their heaviest and most diverse. The Artist in The Ambulance went more in a hard rock direction, while still keeping some harcore, emo, and some metal influence; and is arguable their most technical release to date.

Thrice is a great band, and they have some Christian members although they aren't considered a "Christian" band. If you moved from Relient K to Thrice, it sounds like you are into some heavier stuff. I would highly recommend checking out some hardcore bands such as Zao, the Chariot, He is Legend, or Anything from Solid State Records.

Well, I guess you can't believe everything you read. I read somewhere that it was an indie release or something so the production wasn't as good...I still need to buy it .

It wasn't an Indie release (it was released on Sub City records, a "branch" of Holpess Records) and I've never noticed anything bad about the production.

To be honest, I'm inclined to say that it's their best release yet. It's a must-have if you anything deeper than a casual fan, as long as you can handle the fact that it's a bit heavy at times.

Does anyone understand what songs such as "Paper Tigers" and "Blood Clots and Black Holes" mean? One of the things that attracted me to Thrice besides their music was their lyrics. Songs like "Artist in the Ambulance," Cold Cash and Colder Hearts," and "Melting Point of Wax" captivated of how they captured ideas in such readable, yet profound phrases. Yet, some of their songs I get lost on what they're exactly trying to say. Too bad there's no official cliffnotes for their songs...

I think "Paper Tigers" is about the church and the hypocrites therein, thats what I see in the lyrics.

That song (amoung others) has many different interpetations. I often times find this site almost useless, but some fans have posted reasonable interpetations for Thrice songs.

I personally think that "Blood Clots and Black Hole"s" is about just what it would seem: abuse in the medical industry (perhaps those doctor murderers you hear about every once in a while?). The lyrics to "The Artist in the Ambulance" come from a book called "Burn Collector" by Al Burian, I believe the point is how a musical artist can "lift the spirits" of a listener. "Cold Cash an Colder Hearts" seems to have a message against *certain politicians, saying that they are greedy and do not care about their people. "The Melting Point of Wax" seems to speak of being determined to find the truth no matter the odds, through the symbols from the story of the Flight of the Icarus.

That's what I like so much about Thrice and other bands that have lyrics that are deep and can be read into many different ways. You can interpret the song your own way, and it will have a special meaning for you. I get sick of bands who tell everyone what their songs mean...it takes away from the mystery of art...
