Wait and expect it to be answered. But just wait after you pray and see what God wants to do, and make it ok to you whatever God wants to do. You could also pray for what He wants and what you know he wants according to his word.

It should be our attitude in prayer that we always believe we have received what we pray for when we pray.
Below may be a little overkill. But there are a lot of people who doubt about believing you received when you pray.

Mark 11:24
(AMP) For this reason I am telling you, whatever things you ask for in prayer [in accordance with God’s will], believe [with confident trust] that you have received them, and they will be given to you.

(BSB) Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(CSB) Therefore I tell you, everything you pray and ask for —believe that you have received it and it will be yours.

(ESV) Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(GNT) For this reason I tell you: When you pray and ask for something, believe that you have received it, and you will be given whatever you ask for.

(GobNT) Therefore I say unto you, All things whatsoever you pray for and ask, believe that you just now received them, and they shall be unto you.

(GW) That’s why I tell you to have faith that you have already received whatever you pray for, and it will be yours.

(HCSB) Therefore I tell you, all the things you pray and ask for —believe that you have received them, and you will have them.

(ISV) That is why I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it and it will be yours.

(LSB) For this reason I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted to you.

(MSB) Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(NASB) So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(NASB 1977) “Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they shall be granted you.

(NASB95) “Therefore I say to you, all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you.

(NHEB) Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(NRSV) So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(NIrV) “So I tell you, when you pray for something, believe that you have already received it. Then it will be yours.

(NLT) I tell you, you can pray for anything, and if you believe that you’ve received it, it will be yours.

(LEB) For this reason I say to you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be done for you.

(NENT) Therefore I say unto you, All things whatever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye received them, and ye shall have them.

(NCV) So I tell you to believe that you have received the things you ask for in prayer, and God will give them to you.

(NET) For this reason I tell you, whatever you pray and ask for, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

(RV) Therefore I say unto you, All things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye have received them, and ye shall have them.

(Weymouth) That is why I tell you, as to whatever you pray and make request for, if you believe that you have received it it shall be yours.

(WNT) Therefore, I say to you, all things whatsoever ye pray and ask for, believe that ye received them, and ye shall have them.

(Williams) So then I tell you, whenever you pray and ask for anything, have faith that it has been granted you, and you will get it.

Vincent's Word Studies"
Receive (ἐλάβετε)
More lit., received. Rev., have received.

Wuest
believe that you received

Roberson's Word Pictures
Believe that ye have received them (pisteuete hoti elabete). That is the test of faith, the kind that sees the fulfilment before it happens.

Ellicott's
The better MSS. give the latter verb in the past tense, “Believe that ye received them.”

NASB Lexicon
that you have received

This is completely in line with the Epistle to the Hebrew's definition of faith that pleases God.

Hebrews 11:1 KJV
1. Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

Hebrews 11:6 KJV
6. But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

How should we think about our prayers and should we always expect them to get answered? If I say a prayer and have doubt or expect it will take decades for it to get answered, will it create an issue in God's eyes?
Our suplications are always subject to His will. Pray that we never doubt that His will be done.
Blessings.

To be honest I think it is hard to nail down how God answers prayer. The Bible tells us that if we have faith, we could speak to a mountain and it would move, suggesting anything we ask for is possible with God (Mark 11:23). There are also passages that suggest that often persistence is need in prayer (Luke 11:5-10)

I will speak of one thing "prayer for healing". I have seen prayer answered instantly, an example being a bad back healed the instant the name of Jesus was used in prayer. Then there are cases that are "in process", an example being my sister who has chronic pain, after I started daily praying for her pain there was a reduction in pain to the degree that she sent a text thanking me for the prayer, but it is not completely healed. Then there are people who have even died after prayer. I don't think my faith level is any different with the people I pray for, but I can not lock God down.

Gifts from God are assigned to different people.

1Co 12:28 And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues.

and

1Co 12:31 But earnestly desire the best gifts.

and

Romans 12:6 Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, let us prophesy in proportion to our faith;

But your question seems more along the lines of will lack of faith prevent God from acting?

I think the answer is that we need to seek first God's kingdom. Put effort into His will, be it regular prayers, Bible study etc. Then we will see when God is offering us something.

Mat 6:33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Ok first it does not matter what anyone says what does Gods word say? Christ said what ever you desire when you pray believe you receive it you shall have it. OT delight your self in the lord He will give you the desires of your heart. Keep reading the next verse "Commit your way to the LORD; Trust in Him also and He will do it." Trust aka faith.

NT He said if you know He hears you then you know you have the petitions/prayers you asked for. He also said if you doubt your like a ship tossed back and forth let not that man think he will get anything from God. Christ in one town could only lay hands on a few and teach because of doubt.

So yes doubt always stops God. Its written with out faith its impossible to please Him. Is it not written God answers before you even finish praying" Isa "It shall also come to pass that before they call, I will answer; and while they are still speaking, I will hear.”

I believe it was about a year ago when we were driving and I wanted to pray ask the lord for something to help my wife's faith. So I had this though to ask for something that's impossible to answer with in minutes. So I started to pray and I stopped I had this thought "you already knew what I was going to ask you already set in motion the answer before I ever prayed" It was answered exactly as I asked. And real people with free will came into play. So that meant He knew days before and set in motion the answer. I like so many of you have prayed for so many things some things took 15y to answer but that was personal.. I at 15 always prayed "show me people through your eyes". A prayer I always prayed still do yet I never gave it another thought. That He answered 15y later.

The one for my wife I think it was for me lol. But in all my life I never had the "knowing" He heard me He knew what I was going to ask and He already set in motion the answer before I asked. No I just knew He answered it before I ever finished praying. People get stuck on "Gods will" as if He is like us and sometimes says yes sometimes says now. But God is not man nor thinks like man. You have GODS WILL right before your eyes THE BIBLE! That is Gods will. Any time in that bible you read GOD SAID you never have to pray for it.. He already said it.

All this really we need to back up. Well its faith so do you work your faith? Faith is calling those things that be not as though they were. The Solider had great faith all he did was KNOW what ever Christ said he knew it had to happen. Do you believe Gods word like that? What did Christ say about faith the size of a mustered seed? Yeah most of us do not have that much faith.

So me I pray ask for things that go in line with Gods word. Like you have to have a way to work.. now asking for new CAR! This prayer would fall under "you have not because you ask not or you ASKING WRONG". I use to walk to my job and one night I had this dream I was riding this oh I can still see it haha it was a Yamaha 185. Well one day walking to work I see only this front tire behind this barn you couldnt see anything else. So I knocked on the door and the man said just take it its yours. So I took it and took it to a gas station and the man fixed it. It was a Yamaha 185.

I needed a way to work. You could pray.. you know I don't really want a car.. gas and you have keep it up.. a bike would nice. You prayed it you leave it with Him KNOWING He heard you KNOWING He will haha has answered it. Then out of no where someone talks about a bike free or super cheap. This man that had a prayer ministry they needed drinking glasses so they all prayed. The next day it was on the porch. Now some would think well someone there just bought it but no.. no one told anyone no one there bought them. A Muslim man in prison not in the USA. Found Christ or really Christ found him wanted a bible but never asked for one. One day a man passing his cell said here you asked for this.. it was a bible.

See we tend to wait till something bad GOD FOR BID happens and we then try to believe. So our faith is so weak we then blame God or think He said no. Both are wrong. My little boy when he was 4 feel in the store and I picked him up and his eyes rolled back and went dead. Side not hes 33 and I am shocked at how much this still hurts makes me cry.... jumping to when the ambulance came yet didn't leave. The door opens and the man looks sad said "hes not responding to anything". I turn and say Father I will never blame you. Now I had to be mom and dad.. I am the one that got that bond mothers get. Anyway right after I said that the door opens and the man now is happy saying hes responding!. Helicopter came took them. When I got there (had to drive) I hear this baby screaming DADDDDDDY. He was fine

You start small....believe for things like.. that parking space close to work.. something small that does not touch other peoples will. God will not go against any ones will. So a parking space something like that if nothing happens your faith is not crushed. IF YOU DOUBT just say sorry keep believing. People God left heaven to save us.. He took our sins. He loves you and yes the wealth of the wicked is laid up for us. See FAITH? Those that do know know Christ know faith and how it works. I remember working (finish work) on this house in side the house on the mirror were all these positive notes. That man knew faith.

So pray for things that go inline with the word. So don't put GOD on a time clock. Ask knowing He heard you knowing He did answer.. what ever you desire when you pray BELEIVE (FAITH) you receive it (calling those things that be not as though they were) and you shall have it. He GOD said that.. what you do with it now is your free choice. So don't believe a word I say.. you find this for your self.. PRAYER IS THE KEY
