DEA laboratory testing indicates that 7 out of 10 counterfeit pills contain a potentially lethal dose of fentanyl. Counterfeits made in the United States typically use pill press machines that can easily be purchased online and – depending on size and capacity – can manufacture anywhere from 1,800 pills to more than one million pills per hour. Many of the pill presses shipped to the United States come from China. The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed sanctions on numerous Chinese entities for allegedly distributing pill presses and other equipment used to manufacture illicit fentanyl in the United States. Recently, under "Operation Artemis," CBP officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York seized 14 pill press machines in five separate shipments that arrived from China.
In the United States, pill press laws at the federal level are limited, and state laws are generally weak or nonexistent. Federal law currently prohibits the sale, possession, and use of unregistered pill presses. However, the registration process relies heavily on self-reporting, usually during the sale and transfer of machines. For instance, thousands of pill press machines have been sold through eBay, contributing to the current crisis. Current law also states that any person who possesses a pill press machine with the intent to sell shall be sentenced to a term of imprisonment of not more than four years, a fine or both. We believe that the criminals who manufacture and traffic these deadly drugs should face clearer, harsher penalties.
For more than four years, we have led bipartisan legislation to make possession of a pill press mold with the intent to counterfeit schedule I or II substances a federal crime. Specifically, our Criminalizing Abused Substance Templates (CAST) Act would allow for criminals who possess a pill press and are planning to manufacture counterfeit pills – whether they have yet to do so or not – to be imprisoned for up to 20 years.

Isn't is sad how the inventor of fentanyl never knew how many lives it would claim? Now, we could potentially stop this epidemic using AI and computers, or maybe a system that can track where these pill presses are being transferred. We need to use metal detectors for all shipments of materials from overseas in my opinion. God bless the CBP officers for catching the 14 machines. Also, eBay should pay a massive fine to the government for allowing illicit machinery to be sold on eBay's website, as well as be forced to use metal detectors to scan every box being delivered.

Paul Janssen, a Catholic physician, invented fentanyl in 1959, and passed away in 2003, long before the fentanyl epidemic. Imagine what he would have to say in 2024.

In 2023, over 100,000 Americans passed away from ODs in general. Prayers for the victims of these drugs:

You went in a different direction then I thought you would. My first thought was to use these presses to flood the market with pills that seem to be Fentanyl, but really are sugar pills. Or something else much less harmful.

In the world of BitTorrent, I think that the music industry has put out many many fake files that pretend to be that song one might want to download, only to find that it is not. Maybe fake, safe pills could be done similarly?

I haven't really thought this through -- just posting off the top of my head. Fentanyl deaths are a very serious matter and are a nationwide crisis.

I love this word. For the life of me, I didn't think it was this much! This is why I like some of the articles you guys post that way I can show my kids I'm not an ignorant old man like they think.

These are impressive numbers!

"Last year, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents stopped 27,023 pounds of fentanyl from entering our country. That same year, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) seized more than 77 million fentanyl pills and nearly 12,000 pounds of fentanyl powder."

If you ban pill presses, only bad people will have pill presses.

Also, pill presses don't press pills. People press pills. Pill presses only make it easier.

The only way to stop a bad man with a press, is a good man with a press.....

So are the other arguments. I am already looking forward to the explanation how prohibition of this kind of instrument is more likely to achieve the desired results.

So, could a license be a way of tracking which people use the pill presses? If the pill is legal to make, then the license can be given, and have government inspectors perform random checks on the facility? If the pill press is used to make illegal substances, then the license could be revoked?

I am not a politician, but I am installing a bunch of legal textbooks, the US Code of Law, and the Constitution into my computer, feeding them into the artificial intelligence. Maybe the AI could come up with a solution, or give recommendations on how to put a stop to the fentanyl industry. It should be ready in a day or two.

I believe you because criminals do what they do. I am happy something is being done about this crisis. I prefer the wall to slow this stuff down.

I don't think the pill press can be used legally. On every pill, there is a certain imprint, usually numbers and letters. And every pill is unique, so one can look it up on the web to find out exactly what it is. The presses, to my understanding are forming the shape of the pill, and also the identifying imprint. So the purpose of the pill press is to make something that is pretending to be something else. It is intrinsically deceitful.

Yes, that is what I am saying. But, if someone uses the pill press to make some other type of pill that is legal, such as aspirin, then one could make aspirin. But yes, no citizen should have access to a pill press.

Apparently, fentanyl producers are using pill presses that are designed for aspirin production, and instead using the machines to make fentanyl, meaning it can be difficult to recognize if the pill is harmless aspirin, controlled Xanax, or illegal fentanyl:

I really don't think that there is one action or law that can fix the fentanyl crisis. IMO there should be a multi-pronged approach that puts the most resources into addiction treatment and psychological treatment for depression, anxiety, and other afflictions where people at a young age start to self-medicate because they don't know how to deal with their uncomfortable feelings and intrusive thoughts.

Having gone through the cognitive and dialectical behavior therapy program, I remember that halfway through the program I thought, "I wish they would have taught me this stuff in school. It doesn't "cure." intrusive, unwanted, or harmful thoughts, but it does teach tools that help a person recognize the difference between an intrusive or negative thought and a healthy thought. Pair that with a schedule of self-care activities and positive routines and people are halfway to being able to break the horrors of addiction.

There are surely more practical and less expensive ways to get this information to kids and young adults but it brings me to my real point.......I believe that the only way to stop or even slow down the international drug trade is to treat addicted people. The more people that seek a spiritual connection, a healthy routine and meditation/prayer as well as spending time with healthy people, the lower the demand for it will get. If we try to take it off the streets house by house and corner by corner, we will have the same Hydra that we have now. O dealer gets taken down and three are waiting to take their place The higher demand only makes prices go up and the more people are tempted to sell it.

I'm not saying it's the one-size-fits-all solution but the only way I can see combating this stuff is to eliminate the demand for it. Not the most practical solution but what solution do we have now? Is it working?

This makes sense, Back in the day when I was doing Quaaludes I identified what I was getting with the number 714 (I think, that was almost 50 years ago).

They can be used to press legal substances, like nutritional supplements. I can see a small start up just beginning to produce those substances to use the same pill presses as drug dealers.

The other thing is that fentanyl is not the biggest "street" drug. It's often sold out of high school kids' basements and out of mom's medicine cabinet though I don't deny that the bootleg stuff is easier for street dealers to get. It terms of retail sales.

I don't know for sure, but I think the press includes the identifying marks of a particular pill. So if they make nutritional supplements with the press, they will come out looking like Fentanyl, or whatever else the press was designed to make.

My understanding from reading the DEA website is that pressing and marking pills are distinct actions with different tools.

It's not the act of banning that is the deterrent but rather, the sentence if your caught that might cause people to second guess what they are doing, or to get the illegal pill manufacturers put away for an appreciable amount of time so they aren't on the streets hurting people.

As a general thread comment the new law sounds promising but of course it's not the only way people are dying from Fentanyl.

I was in a chat just the other day and someone was talking about having just lost their son only a few days prior because he thought he was buying regular marijuana but it was laced with fentanyl and killed him instantly.

They really are just trying to kill people I think.... We have to get that border closed and do a better job with enforcing laws.
