Is this a fairly accurate summary of what the Orthodox attitude is?

" Consider yourself to have the capacity within yourself to be the worst sinner, taking upon yourself the sins of the whole world. Then, weep for the sins of all the world as if they were your own, trusting in the mercy and compassion of God to always take you back despite your wretchedness, even as an unfaithful wife would return to her loving husband's open arms in joyful sorrow, and you will find that God will spare you and also the world for the sake of such a simple prayer offered in true humility. "

I dont know why I put that in quotes. Thats more of a summary of what I percieved to be the general Orthodox teaching after reading the desert fathers, the lives of the saints, and spending a lot of time at monasteries. I'm sort of just trying to size up my peception against the community (not just TAW, but also my local parishes).

This is a wonderful statement & St. Paul's abiding in love, faith, & hope come to mind for me (1 Corinthians 13:13) in much of this. We acknowledge our wretchedness but not hopelesness for ourselves or others; praying for our own & others' salvation & avoid being presumptuous.

I'm glad the responses have been positive so far. I felt very strongly at the monastery I visited that this is the true attitude, and, as difficult as it is to admit yourself as being utterly wretched, the comfort that comes from running to God seems to really outweigh the sorrow. It is only, I think, not having experienced the Grace beforehand that makes the admittance of utter sinfulness initially difficult.

Yes, very nicely put- forgive me for asking who said it hehe. I figured since it was in quotes... May I quote you? It's very beautiful.

In IC XC,

You may, but on the condition that I'm not given credit, for if I have said anything good, it is because I have undeservedly received some Grace from God.
