  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I read this article in the latest issue of Orthodox Heritage and thought it's worth posting here:

Please tell me you do not take the writer seriously?

The writer didn't even bother to actually quote the Pope, only putting select words in quotations.

It was a long winded rant because the Pope asserted that the Orthodox are not in full communion with the See of Rome and thus missing something. Would anyone in the Orthodox church not say the same in reverse?

It is attitudes like these that make reconciliation difficult- because it's about making people angry and seeing their brothers as 'the enemy'. The irony is what the author wrote was exponentially more offensive than any misinterpretation of the Pope's words.

If you read the article you realize it's about much more than the Pope's recent comments. It's about the erroneous claims of the Popes throughout the centuries, which are not just minor sticking points. Of course we believe and see that something is missing within the RCC, but the point is that these issues must be struggled with, by each of us, to achieve unity between the Orthodox and each individual member of the RCC. I don't see unity coming in one large reconciliation, but as reconciliation being made between the Church and each person, one by one.

This is our hope- that we will all be united in Christ as one body. We aren't attempted to make enemies among men, but to challenge the false claims of the Popes, who've claimed infallibility and suprememcy.

While the author is heavy handed, im glad someone is saying what needs to be said.

I for one have never fallen to the lovey dovey ultra-liberal political correctness of "we are brethren, we must unite, lets hold hands to save christian europe".

There is only One Body of Christ, not branches of it, nor two lungs, nor some para-church that can convert the entire world by holding hands and singing Kumbaya.

We should note something very important about the article, and the author's object. He is attacking schism, not each and every person ever associated with the Roman Church from the Great Apostasy to the present. In addition, he rightly levels his specific indictment against the Pope and his ecclesiastical agents. Christ did the very same thing. He didn't attack the common people, he attacked leadership. False teachers in lambs' clothing who were wolves, and demon hierarchs appearing as angels of light to deceive and devour.

The author's intent was clearly in keeping with the content of Holy Scripture: leaders will be judged on a higher standard.

The mercy of God is infinite, and His goodness and love extends beyond the four walls of the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church that is Orthodoxy.

No one should have interpreted this article as a Divine indictment on the soul of every man, woman and child who has ever taken the name Roman Catholic.

“Christ is not present but absent and invisible. Behold me! I have been appointed by Christ as your head. I am the visible Head of the Church, and only by unity with me are you in the church. Do not think that the Holy Spirit is your guide, for I am your guide and I will lead you into all truth, which I and only I will proclaim from Rome. For God has bestowed upon me alone, universal primacy and authority over the entire world. More than that, it is impossible for me to err in the faith for I alone am the reliable and infallible one! I alone possess the keys to heaven and hell. I stand before you as a humble and gentle man.”

I read, many moons ago, the Jesuit oath. It coincides with this statement.

I have nothing against Catholics in a person....People are not the heads of church...and I love many whom are Catholic and am proud to call them my dear friends.

I do fear the above statement, as for me, Christ is very much present and visible. I need no man to tell me that only he represents my Lord! I need only my Lord!!!

The problem with the article is that firstly, it begins with a hypocrisy- criticizing the See of Rome for an attitude generally held by any bishop or member of the Orthodox church.

More than that, however, is that the article is an exercise in complete intellectual dishonesty. Look at the title of the article, "Papacy and its Unholy State". Does that sound like something an eastern scholar or genuine critic of the Catholic Church would destroy the credibility of his writing with? At best, it's an amateur, long-winded opinion article. At worst, it's a misleading propaganda piece that goes against everything the Orthodox church stands for. It criticizes the Pope without ever actually quoting anything he said. Instead, it quotes select pieces used to go off on rampaging tangents.

The author surprised me in going off on the same tired and dishonest tactics of protestant anti-Catholic writers. This includes making statement against something that implies the Catholic Church believes it to be so.

Most Orthodox are smarter than to by into this article because they know what the See of Rome teaches. They don't agree with it, by they know that the Pope doesn't want to lead people to worshiping and praising him over Christ.
Don't let people play with your emotions and the cost of your own reason. Stuff like this bitters your soul- and that's what the author intends to do.
