I am very happy to report that my church is adopting the New City Catechism and we will be going through it in the coming year in both the Sunday meeting and children's ministry.

"We decided to adapt Calvin's Geneva Catechism, the Westminster Shorter and Larger Catechisms, and especially the Heidelberg Catechism, to produce New City Catechism. While giving exposure to some of the riches and insights across the spectrum of these great Reformation-era catechisms, New City Catechism also looks at some of the questions people are asking today."

The church needs to clearly present the Gospel to every generation but I don’t believe this catechism is it. I don’t really like TCG all that much either. Maybe I’m too sectarian? I don’t know. I think Baptists should be Baptists and Presbyterians should be Presbyterians. Doctrine divides. That stated we shouldn’t be traditionalists on the issue of confessions and catechisms. Just because something is old doesn’t mean it is the best expression of doctrine. It would have been better for the folks involved to update the language of the older confessions, clarify modern issues such as marriage, etc. and reissue it.

I don’t understand why mirco-Presbyterianism is so traditional. This traditionalism is snobbery as well. It’s stifling. Don’t believe me visit the Puritan Board.

As a husband and father I try to embrace the responsibility of teaching and leading my family in the Christian faith. It is a joy to point them to Christ alone for salvation and I lovingly do my best to encourage them to have faith in Jesus Christ. One of the ways I attend to this duty is by using a catechism. Over the years we have used several different catechisms but have recently decided to start fresh the New City Catechism. My children are not new to the Reformed faith or the method of teaching known as catechism but we have fallen away from the practice over the last year. I chose this catechism because it most often repeats the Heidelberg and the app is easy to use. Seems simplistic…yes, but I have bigger fish to fry when it comes to the continued instruction of the children (young adults now). They will soon be off to college or university and there is no time like the present to usher them into the arms of Christ and the church.

We started our family time last night with prayer and a devotion on delighting in the Lord, moved to the NCC and read the first group of questions.

Ok, my thoughts...it's a little short, unnecessarily so... Everyone likes the app and how easy and accessible it is but we are just going to finish up the catechism and move on.
