I saw “The Last Samurai” recently and thought the film was very well put together. I enjoy going to the movies as much as the next guy. I do however, find it hard sometimesto separate the entertainment of films from the messages they portray.
It is good to recognize what messages we are receiving from any source of media on a daily basis. A friend of mine saw the film with me and we both felt the same thing after the movie started. What we picked up from the picture was a heavy anti-gun and anti-American message throughout.
The only thing missing was the hate Bush rally. At one point I was thinking one of the characters would just get up and make an obvious statement. Maybe something like “I think while we are fighting for our samurai roots, we should pull our troops out of iraq as well”. But oh nooo…we get the run around from slick sally and dapper dan.
I will build a case for this as I give a rundown on what the picture showed and how they displayed it. Once again, I did enjoy this movie but I like to analyze what my intellect is going to digest from such a piece of work. Most of the time we get the message of good triumphing over evil. This is the basic fundamentals of good storyline morals and guidelines. The grey area has ever so increased in what we watch today.
The story starts out with Tom’s character in a drunken stooper and there is an American flag crumpled up in the corner. He gets up in front of a large crowd to talk about his victories over the indians while serving in the U.S military. Then he talks about killing for modern invention or some gibberish while he holds out his rifle. From the get go they make you feel like guns are bad and they are only killing innocent people.
Only Hollywood would use guns to protest guns. The “GOOD GUYS” refuse to use guns and only wield blades and arrows because guns are bad. The “BAD GUYS/U.S” are wanting to wipe a people from the face of japan for oil! Oh wait… that is another fairy tale! I keep getting my stories mixed up. I have been watching too much CNN. Please forgive me for losing focus there.
We get to see several “Honorable” self assisted suicides. After all…. we have the right to choose don’t we? Ending life out of convenience is part of the master plan. I am thinking of hosti-ng a mass suicide/bar-b-q at my place.
By the end of the movie, you have poor helpless samurais being gunned down with gatlin guns by “THE MAN.” It all ends with Japan refusing to deal arms with the U.S any longer because of what it stands for. After seeing the movie I felt convicted. I called up Charlton Hesston and we turned in our guns together. We cried…we laughed and then we bowed down to Japan.
Great movie! And if you pre-order it on DVD you get a free swastika arm patch!
GO SCIENTOLOGY!!
