More than a few times, though I have learned to keep my mouth shut better, I have come across Christians and nominal Christians that when their kid comes out as gay, or converts to Catholicism, or some sort of action that reflects a heart that is far from the Lord, they swear up and down that their kid is saved.

While with the Catholicism the issue can be dicier (though in my judgment, those who seek to put themselves back under the Law show that they do not understand the Gospel at all and Paul says there is no other one), I wonder what you guys think about this. Is this common among mothers? Does the Scripture address the issue indirectly somewhere?

Thanks!

There are even "evangelical" pastors that have changed their views because their children have come out as gay....Yes, it is idolatry.

We all like to believe our children are prodigal’s…

The fact of the matter, we should be praying for their salvation and not their moral reformation just so we can feel better.

Yours in the Lord,

A big thing that has made me think more about it is an older woman I very much respect from a PCA church, and her deceased husband was a Presbyterian pastor, sadly had her oldest son die. Without me even bringing it up, she gets into that even though he converted to Catholicism, she is more assured of his salvation than anyone she knows.

To convert to a false religion, with its idolatries and corruptions of traditions, to me shows a mind that has denied the faith. Because unlike Catholics who out of their ignorance remain and are saved by hearing and seeing the Gospel, but in bad judgment remain, a Presbyterian-turned-Catholic has flagrantly rejected the Gospel for a works-based one.

I heard he was a very nice man. I had a teacher that first taught me to read the Scripture, an Episcopalian-turned-Catholic, who is also a very nice man. He adopted 16 different children, they all still talk to him and are very close. He is a very liberal Catholic, does not believe in the authority of Scripture, but is the nicest man you know.

I don't think people like this, but the nicest people you know are nothing in God's sight. "If you are righteous, what do you give to Him or what does He receive from your hand" (Job 35:7)? Our righteousness and niceness cannot save us, only our faith in Christ does. And, I think it twisted and cruel of Satan to use a woman's son and tempt him to evil but also visibly live righteously, just to deceive his mother.

The thought saddens me. Because I don't know him, I will have to reserve absolute judgment. May GOd have mercy on us, for we are so quickly led away by our idols.

34"Do not think that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35"For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; 36and A MAN'S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD.

Not saying that's my personal take, but that is the first scripture that popped into my head.

Attachment to things of this world always causes pain and that includes family.
