The Doctrine of Election?

I don't believe in this, but when I posted in one of my journals:

I also believe that God loves everybody. I believe he sent Jesus to save us. I believe we are all born with a sinful nature, but when we decide to receive the gift of salvation given to us that Jesus sees us as righteous even though we are in a constantly sinful state. I also believe that God gives the gift of salvation to all, but we must accept it. It is available to all. It is not or our works that we are saved, for even when we doubt, God has the gift of salvation. It is just that we must accept it. When we accpet, God rejoices. We are the sheep that returns to the shepherd's flock. We are the coin that the finder finds.

A friend replied:

Hmmm... that I disagree with. Scripture speaks clearly on the doctrine of election - that not all are chosen. Only those chosen (predestined) will be saved. It is true that all who accept His gift will be saved, but God chooses us before we choose Him. A casual reading of John or Romans makes these points clear.

Where in John or Romans would one find such things? No verses were given and I've read John and Romans. I already has a discussion with a friend here about not accepting this view and giving verses supporting that (though more are always welcome!)

Well hello KagomeShuko and a warm welcome to SR .

It will take time but it will be worth the study , the Scriptures do teach both :

that all men need to do is repent and believe on the Lord Jesus and they will be saved. AMEN!

Then the scriptures do also clearly teach unconditional Election to life.

"So how can that be" ? , I hear you say .

Well the difference can best be explained by a careful study of man's Total Depravity.

Thanks for the verses. I'm not exactly sure how you get your ideas. I think I might see how in John. . .

Plus Ephesians 1-4 and 2 Thessalonians 2:13.

You have been given some very good Scripture already, here is an article that may help where it addresses Luther and election.

Luther believed that divine election was the cause of our salvation. The doctrine was for the comfort of the believer. He wrote: "The human doctrine of free will and of our spiritual powers is futile. The matter (salvation) does not depend on our will but on Gods will and election." Since salvation is totally of Gods doing, the doctrine of election comforts those who believe. We can say, "I belong to God! I have been chosen by God. I am one of his sheep!"
