Brief Synopsis:
This pro-homosexual day communicates clear (and false) messages to ALL students in the school that: homosexuality is a worthy lifestyle; that it has few or no risks; that some people are "born" homosexual, including students; and that those who oppose this behavior are hateful and uninformed.

What do you all think?
Thanks,
TT

I think it's about calling attention to and remembering the violence, bullying and harassment at schools against peole for their perceived sexuality.
http://www.dayofsilence.org/content/getinformation.html
It's student led, something they do voluntarily and isn't sponsored by the schools. Not everyone participates even even if some students do. It doesn't disrupt class or school function.

I guess my question is what do YOU think?

No, it is a day to draw attention "to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools." This year's Day of Silence is dedicated to Lawrence King, a high school student who was killed because of his sexual orientation.

You can learn more about the Day of Silence at http://www.dayofsilence.org/.

This is the third thread that I have seen on this topic. The other two quickly moved off-topic and onto homosexual bashing. Unfortunately I assume that thsi one will go the same way.

Seems that it's going to the opposite side of the spectrum...fundy bashing.

Everyone should just get a life and stop bashing each other for their opposing views. It's just an opinion.
Are you suggesting that people should ignore misstatements about such things as the Day Of Silence because presenting the facts of this event might offend fundamentalists?

Day of Silence is about hate-crimes and such, as the link says. My question is: Texastig, why do you automatically fire off against anything even mentioning homosexuals without saying they should all be shot? I mean really, this day doesn't say everyone should be gay, but that you shouldn't hurt someone for being gay. Do you think that's a bad thing?

To the best of my knowledge, no GBLT person nor any of their supporters has ever said that it would be immoral to protest against the idea that Linda Harvey (the founder and apparently sole proprietor of "Mission America") might be beaten or killed for living out her life as she feels called to.

Therein lies the difference.

I like BreadAlone's mod hat! : D I've been playing too much SSBB.

Day of Silence is run by students. It's only a propaganda attempt if you let it be. Ironically enough, it's Christians pushing that it's purpose is to press the "homosexual agenda" that brings more students to participate FOR that reason.

It seems like a good idea to me. When I was at school, calling someone gay was an insult. Homophobia was all but ignored. I can't imagine how lonely and scared those who actually were gay in my school must have felt. If we'd had something like this, it could have done a lot of good.

from article said:
Parents: Keep your kids home if your school is officially holding, or passively allowing among a group of students, this pro- homosexual event.

...wont this make the school even more silent?

It occurs to me that probably the best "counter-protest" that a Christian who "believes in the sinfulness of homosexuality" but truly means what he says about his/her beliefs would be to wear a T-shirt or something with the message "Gay sex is sin but so is gay-bashing" or something of the sort.

How about a "jesus saves" tee shirt .... leave any condemnation out of it since dress codes frown upon negativity.

When something like the murder of Lawrence King occurs, people are quick, after the fact, to condemn both the violence and the conditions that led to the violence. But only after the violence has exploded.

When you protest against something like the Day of Silence you are saying, whether you intend to or not, that violence at less than lethal levels against children who are different is OK.

You are saying that it is OK what happens daily to 15-year-old Billy Wolfe in Arkansas.

From the NY Times article:

There is nothing in the article to indicate that Billy is gay. It is possible that he was percieved as "gay" because he was smaller than his classmates, or because he was not as good at sports, or whatever, but later when the kids learned the meaning of the word, they simply assumed that he was gay.

But even if he is gay, does he deserve to be beat up daily, and then punished for disrupting the school day?

This is exactly the purpose of the Day of Silence. And in this case, it is true: If your not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.
