  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it unethical to watch a movie you know is completely wrong. We were discussing the Da Vinci code in Sunday School last Sunday and we watched a movie on the inaccurate ideas in the Da Vinci code, along with the real Biblical truth and correction of historical events. It got me curious though. I don't think I would like it much but I am curious to see it. Is the show totally unethical, and is it moral to watch it if it is? Usually I don't watch scary movies of the sort but I don't know what it is totally about.

I don't see the viewing of the movie as being unethical from my own personal perspective as well as from my understanding of Christian teaching. Otherwise it would be immoral to read or view anything that you disagreed with. It's like saying it's immoral to watch Gone With The Wind because you disagree with the way Mammy was portrayed as a happy slave.

I can't see it as being unethical. I believe that most people who object to it object because they are worried that people will believe the movie is factual instead of a work of fiction. As long as you are aware going in what is true I see no issues for you.

Is it unethical to watch a work of fiction turned into a movie?

Was it unethical to watch Lord of the Rings, Spiderman, Superman, etc?

Then no, its not unethical. Ethics really has nothing to do with it. If you are to afraid to watch something because you think it might change your views, then your views are not based on a solid foundation and need to be re-examined.

Only reason to hide from something is out of fear. And only those of weak conviction need fear ideas.

The only thing I'd ask you to think about in this is do you want to give your money to the people who made the movie?

You could get the book or the movie (when it comes out on DVD) at the library, as most will carry it.

Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a man to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother to fall. So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin. (Romans 14:20-23)

Lily, let me point you to Romans. For sure Christians don't need to be watching, listening to or partaking in a lot of the worldly things that we do. It lessens our witness. Now a lot of folks think that's being a little legalistic, but it's still the truth.

With the DaVinci Code, yes it's entertainment just like any other form of entertainment. But I would hope that Christians were not stewarding God's money to watch porn. SO likewise, why would Christians want to put money in the pockets of those who would create something that is an obvious stumbling block to millions worldwide?

Should Christians go to movies in which there is profanity?nudity?

Rather than raising the bar of holiness, today's Christians seem to be dropping it so as to accommodate their lifestyles of personal enjoyment via being entertained by that which is unholy.

I fail to see why it is an obvious stumbling block for millions worldwide. Can you explain why you feel that it is?

Nope. If your religion doesn't want you to think for yourself or question anything you should ditch it. People who live in a bubble can't actually make an informed decision about anything...including the decision to become a Christian IMHO. Wath or read The DaVinci Code for your own enjoyment or to satisfy your curiosity, anyone telling you not to is trying to control you. Why would you allow that?

It's a stumbling block because it is the truth that is God's Word that sets men free. And if men are not being given God's Word, they can't be set free.

This book/movie essentially refutes what God's Word says.

This fosters confusion because people see it as a viable option, even if the option runs counter to what God's Word says and gives witness to.

Just like the father of lies, the Da Vinci Code is attempting to imitate truth in such a way as to make it appear to be truth. And when you dupe millions of people into thinking the things that this book/movie espouses is truth, then it is indeed a stumbling block.

This book essentially, like many other false teachings, creates a jesus christ who is not the Jesus Christ that the Holy Bible says He is.

That is a stumbling block, and millions are tripping all over it.

Zaac, I don't think you're giving people enough credit. Most people possess the ability to discern between what is fact and what is fiction.

IMO, if some cheesy summer blockbuster was enough to seriously challenge one's faith.. the movie wasn't the problem.

I agree with what most everybody else has said. I think its good to understand the movie, so you can explain what really happened if the movie comes up in a conversation with non christians, but you dont need to watch the movie to fully understand the details. I wouldnt want to support the movie, but I might see it when it comes out on DVD, since I can get free rentals.

So what popular fiction movies are ok to watch under this analysis? (oh, please don't exclude any of the Star Wars movies!)

I read The DaVinci Code and saw the movie. As always, the book was much better. Anyone with half a brain recognizes the plot is a bit of a stretch, but the story is told so well that it makes it believable while you're reading it. This is what good stories set in our world (as opposed to a fantasy world) do - they weave reality with fiction.

Dan Brown's book (and I've since read several others of his) asks the great quesion of "what if?", and weaves a thriller of a story around it. It's a fun read, period. Which is why I agree with Fillerbunny - if this story is going to be such a problem to one's faith, then that person's faith has much, much bigger issues than this story.

If age appropriate then absolutely. Words are only profane because we choose to let them be. And nudity? Well people should probably be familiar with the human form so they don't over-sexualize the opposite gender. Full on sex scenes are another matter. I personally don't even like seeing that, but then I can always avert my eyes until that part is over if I really want to see the movie.

It's on my reading list.

Here's the thing: if a movie can shake your faith, you didn't have faith to begin with.

If you're constantly secluding yourself into a world of Christian-only influences (I'm not saying you are, but it's an attitude I see on these boards) for fear that something is going to corrupt your beliefs then that's a problem with you, your faith.
