lol
If we are going to talk about strictly technical drum playing then I will bring up Rodney Holmes and Jojo Mayer. Rodney got famous by playing for a time with Carlos Santana, but I really got into his skills through the Steve Kimock Band. Jojo Mayer was just a real force in bringing the idea of breakbeat music into the minds of more people.

But if we are talking about music being musical, as in creating feelings in the bottom of your stomach, etc, then I still find Jon Fishman to be the original drum virtuoso of the modern age.

Musical drumming? Hard to find these days.

Here is a classic example of one of the best of this type. We do not get this sort of feel anymore.

Also.. Max Weinberg, Carmine Appice, and Steve Smith have all paid tribute to the following drummer. A drummer that inspired them all. Sandy Nelson - "Let there be Drums."

that was a fun clip - thanks

That was classic Rock and Roll.

Now.. here's one more. But, this time its jazz.

Here is one of the all time champs of musical drum soloing. One night on the news in the late 1970's they were showing that Joe Morello was back playing live. He had lost most of his sight by then from an eye disease. They also reported that he said he is now a born again Christian.

The very best at what he did...

good stuff.

if you like a lot of that solo drum music check out the breakbeat player jojo mayer and also brian blade.

The topic for my videos were examples concerning musical drumming. Most drumming today is technical, not musical. Brian Blade is a unique combination of the two and one of my favorites. JoJo Mayer is a matter of taste, but he would not be classified as musical drumming. He's technical.

Nothing wrong with that if that's what you prefer. Both Sandy Nelson and Joe Morello are famous for playing with a very musical feel. They swing. There are others that do, too, of course. Today, many musicians have become technical, especially drummers. I am a drummer, so I have noticed the huge change over the years.

A musical drummer can play one simple beat that will move you emotionally. Its like a well placed simple genuine kiss. The technical drummers are like a kiss from someone that has to read a book on how to treat a girl. Its without feeling in a relaxed melodic sort of way. Its out to impress with how much one can do, rather than to bond emotionally in a relaxed musical sort of way with the listener.

Gene Krupa may have been simpler than Buddy Rich, but he was quite technical in his own right. Yet, all Gene had to do was to hit a drum a certain way and tap a cow bell and the crowd was ready to move. Other drummers could hit the same drum and cow bell and no one would notice. Buddy Rich admitted to this himself. Louie Belson passed the story along.

Not many drummers are musical players today. Just like many guitarists have become screamers and moaners. Very few play musically these days. Lots of it has to do with the prevalence of drugs, sex, and paganized music culture that drains the life out of musicians. Anti-Christ = no life, only energy and lust. The technical intricacy replaces life. Its become both technically sophisticated in one way, yet primitive and base in another. Boorish. Not uplifting.

But,to each his own. If the music was not liked it would not be selling. And in the world of the music industry the dollar is the bottom line.

In Christ, GeneZ

Yeah...
I think you are right on the money with your perspective on the music scene. The lack of God in the hearts of the players can be seen in their playing. Maybe a lot of sparks and booms on the surface to cover up some void beneath. I am a guitar/ keyboard player and I notice this too frequently. If music is a language, people end up screaming or muttering because they have little in the way of constructive ideas or melodic resonance to offer.

That is a great clip of Blade playing. You can see it on his face... he has something inside that is emerging through his craft and through the art that we all love. Not that the something has to be God, but God allows that something to enter inside the human body.

Even though I am not much of a drummer, I love listening to guys like Blade and Fishman because I get inspiration and ideas that I can translate to instruments that I can actually play. I respect people who can drum well, musically, as you are phrasing it, because it is such a sensitive form.

As I see it, the closer to God we grow, the more at ease we become, the easier ideas flow through us, etc...

This all means that the most important part of "music theory" or "ear training" is really spiritual practice and the discipline of the human soul.
