God did this so that men would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us. Acts 17:27

Prayers offered at political conventions are sometimes verbose, pompous, and "God-informing," as when a churchman is supposed to have opened his prayer on the platform with this words: "Lord, as You have read in the morning paper . . . " More acceptable is the prayer of Tevya in The Fiddler on the Roof, who looked heavenward and said, "Lord, it says in the Scripture -- well, You should know, for You wrote it . . ."

Yes, God is all-knowing; there is no need to inform Him on what He has said or done. God knows everything people say and do, even the sins that people do in secret: the evil plotting, the practice of dishonesty under the guise of respectability, the unfaithfulness in marriage relationships.

God knows the little events in our lives, as the psalmist declares, "You know when I sit and when I rise . . . before a word is on my tongue You know it completely" (Ps. 139:2,4)

"You are the God who sees me" said Sarah's maid, Hagar, to God when she was in distress (Gen 16:13) The fact of God's ever-present eye, ear, and mind should keep us from sinning -- as happened to a young man who, after he returned from the army told his pastor, "I was kept from much sin by remembering that God always sees me."

God's all-knowing power, however, should give us comfort and assurance. Because of it, He knows our needs, our afflictions, our weaknesses, and these move Him to compassion. Above all, He knows our need for the salvation Jesus Christ procured for us. He knows that we love Him in return. Our Lord, as the Good Sheperd, knows us as His sheep and is known by us as our best friend.

Father, I pray that I, and others like me come to know your love in Christ more fully, and to trust you more completely in your all your glorious ways. In Christ name I ask, Amen
