Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

What is your view on the third commandment, I can't say I've ever really given it much thought. Other than to not blaspheme when talking.

But tonight I have been thinking about what does this commandment mean, sparked off by a TV show we have here in Australia called "thank God your here" I have been really enjoying the show and think it's quite funny but is the title of this show breaking the 3rd commandment??? anyone care to comment, not just on whether the show is breaking the commandment but on what they see this commandment involving.

I believe Matt. 7:21-23 applies to this...

This commandment has deep spiritual meanings. Much along the line Wooba said...

In the Bible time, when a woman is married to a man, she takes his name: eg. the wife of Jacob. And the same applies to his children (including the adopted): eg. the children of Israel. This is still true in other parts of the world today, but not much in America: the family name has honors associated to it.

The name represents mainly two things
- the honor of the person: characters
- the privillage of the person: inheritance

The Bible likens the Lord as the husband/bride groom and the believers/church as the woman/bride. So when we profess to be His followers, we are married unto the Lord and/or become His children.

So to call ourselves Christians, we must act like the person we take the name from: Christ.

Lev 21:6 They shall be holy unto their God, and not profane the name of their God: for the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and the bread of their God, they do offer: therefore they shall be holy.

Also we have the inheritance that the Lord promised.

So if we call ourselves Christians but our acts do not reflect Christ characters, we are taking His name in vain.

in my opinion
If you are not having a discussion about the Bible or in a prayer, do not mention Gods name, there are many phrases people use, that I will not repeat. In which they mention Gods and Jesus’ name for no reason. That is breaking this commandment. I have been known at times to break this commandment and ask God every day to forgive me and help me stop using his name in vain. Their not graphic words, but just words thnever really catch ourselves saying.

In my opinion anything like

God Dam
My God
Oh My Lord
Oh Jesus

Any of these secular sayings in my opinion, are breaking the 3rd commandment. Vain means not using a word (God, Lord, Jesus etc appropriately. The Lords name only appropraite ways to be used is in study, praise, prayer and conversation on religion etc: The ssaying thank God you're here. In my opinion if the show is about literally thanking and praising God that you are here it's okay. If it's anything else I think it isn't too suitable for a title. But we shouldn't judge something by it's title. I've heard about the show but never seen it. You should do whats right in your opinion. What you think God is impressing you to do. For some it may be, for some it may be bad. If this show draws you away from God don't watch it. If it does, and you always think about it, don't watch. Only watch it if it dosn't ruin your relationship with God ,and take away your time with Him. But remember, God won't keep you out of the kingdom for a TV show, unless there is something seriously wrong with it!
