Yes. There were a rash of this type of songs. Here is one from several years earlier. Johnny Preston with Running Bear. Trivia--This song was written by J.P. Richardson, aka The Big Bopper, who, by the way, sings on the recording! He is one of the men singing the Indian chants in the background!
