Taking God's Name in Vain

Why is the sin of taking God's name in vain so dismissed?

I'm talking about:

Oh my God! I love that outfit! Oh my God! How are you? Oh, my God! Isn't that Jenna?

It's one of the 10 commandments, yet said with frequency, and rarely considered a sin.

It's more than just using words. If a person calls themselves a Christian and then goes out and lives their lives opposite of their confession, they take that name in vain that they call themselves by.
Don't you think it is ironic that people curse with God's name always on their lips? It means something deep.

Proverbs 30:8 Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me:
9 Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.

I dont think there is one movie out there these days that doesn't use God's name in vain. And it's everywhere not just movies. =S

You are very right. sadly, most people these days take God's name in vain. another way to do that would be to pray and not take you're words seriously.

I think it is one thing to not be Christian and hit your thumb and say, Jesus tapdancing Christ.

However, it's pretty common to be a woman, and say, "Oh my God! That's so cute!

It's also pretty common to be male or female and say, "god! That's was close! or Jesus! What a jerk!

But interesting how it is rarely addressed as one of the hot issues.

You're right Beanieboy. Personally I have people around me all day who use God's name in vain and even Christ's. It makes me sick and also offended. I can only imagine how God feels.

Probably the reason that it doesn't get much attention is because it's a very common sin and doesn't hurt anyone except God. Sad but true.

A large part of our society, or at least the visible part, has little to no respect for the Almighty. I think that those who love God will curb their own tongue, and teach their children to refrain from using His name is such a way. I do not allow my kids to say that.

Right! The word "God" is merely a title, and a Greek one at that. Scholars say that the TRUE pronunciation of ANCIENT Hebrew is long lost, with it I would imagine, the true and rightful Sacred Name is lost as well. After all, how can you actually defile a name you cannot pronounce?

Dear Beanieboy. It is a sin, God did forbid it, and Jesus did too. To love God with all our hearts, all our souls, and all our minds, says it quite clearly. It makes God sad, and is unworthy to God, and demeaning to the person using it. Greetings from Emmy, sister in Christ.

I also hear people use the name of the Lord in vain quite a bit. I have always been really sensitive to it though. I was never one to use "bad words" and I try very hard not to use God's name in an unholy way (unfortunately I do sin sometimes )
I have been know though to ask people to watch their language because it makes me uncomfortable and I certainly don't want my kids to pick up inappropriate uses of God's name.

this is what i think the Hebraic concept of taking the Name in vain is about. it's a heart issue, not a slang issue.

the Hebraic concept of "the Name" means more than just the word "God"... "God" is a title (as someone said above). God's Name is actually Y...H..V..H (in Hebrew that's "yod hey vav hey").

That would actually be YHWH. The V was integrated into the language much later, as were the dagesh and vowel sounds in general. Instead of Vav it was commonly pronounced Wah, or occasionally Waw.

Well it's a sin cause you are taking the name of the Lord which is holy and you are using it as a profane word. You're taking the name of the Lord, who created you, and making it lower than dirt.
