  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have windows XP and a few days ago I started getting
a no page to display popup all the time while on and off line.
I talked to AOL and they told me they are not the problem and it may be from
internet spies and that I needed spyware. Well I did get the spyware but I still
have this popup. It says at the top of the page that its a reminder for sept 22 and I did not set any type of reminder. How Do I get rid of this?
I have to hit ctrl alt delete a hundred times a day and its always still
running on my task bar. Thanks for any help.

What is Kazza?
My husband installed something to get rid
of spyware but what is a firewall? Thanks all
Ok, look at it this way.....Pretend your computer is a spaghetti strainer with all the holes, those are called ports......when you go online your computers "ports" are all open and programs send/receive information through them.....now when you put a firewall on it closes all of those unused ports blocking harmful internet traffic.....it only allows the ports open to known programs and then only allows that program to communicate through that specific port....thus blocking harmful virus/worms (but worms are another lesson).......

ok, I think u are confused, spyware is something you DO NOT want....

1. what you need to do is use those utilitys that I posted to scan and remove spyware

2. Install the Zone Alarm, it's a free firewall....it will ask you for each program that accesses the internet, checkmark to always allow a program access if it's one that should be and then click permit, if u'r not sure don't checkmark it and just click permit, if it is persistant than you can check that

3. Then update your norton antivirus using live update....If you are unable to update your virus definitions and it says your subscription service is out of date then you need to upgrade your norton antivirus to a newer version, I have a link to where it only cost about $15 including shipping.....you need to run liveupdate on your norton once a week to keep your computer up to date and virus free....

4. run windows update and update the Critical Updates & Service packs, the other updates listed uner Windows XP are not as important, but you can install them if you want to....

Doing #3 + 4 once a week will keep your system up to date and the Zone alarm will protect you from worms/trojan horses and doesn't require an update and #1 is only needed if you start having problems again..... Goodluck and feel free to ask any questions you have.

Before I get in to the no page to display can you please tell me how to get a firewall. Thanks so much!
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=zadb_zadown

Click on the link and when the page opens click the link that says "Download Free ZoneAlarm" and when the download dialog pops up click "Save" and then save it to your Desktop (scroll up the drive list) and then you can double click on the file on the desktop and install Zone Alarm.....

Will Zone Alarm work with AOL though?
I know how AOL likes to control everything so this may be interesting.
Yes, I just installed Zone Alarm on a windows 98 system using AOL 8.0 and it works fine..... Once the zone alarm is installed it will ask you if you want to give access to aol and when it does make sure you tell it to always use this choice and then click permit and then AOL has access....the same with any other program that connects to the internet....

Thanks doofus125.

I assumed Zone Alarm would do that as it does with all programs. I am running Zone Alarm along with a LinkSys router so I have double protection.
It's better to have the Zone alarm or another software firewall because hardware firewalls that come in the routers don't work very well, at least the cheeper one's don't....I have a D-Link Router hooked up to this system and I couldn't tell the difference when I turned on the firewall on the router so I just left it off and installed Norton Internet Security and it's working better than the firewall that came in the router, but you don't need to turn off the firewall that is on the router.....Happy Surfing

Actually the NAT in this LinkSys is VERY good.

Go to Steve Gibson's web site and check your security level.
Mine is completely in stealth mode and is as safe as possible.

I had Norton's in the past but have since removed it as I think it is a waste of resources.

I couldn't agree more. I have the Linksys router, and had Norton installed. I removed it for the same reasons. Nothing ever touched it.
