Some time Star Trek has subtle meanings in some stories that are anti-religion and/or anti-god. Gene Roddenberry the creator of the show was atheist and their are many interviews that would tell you what he thought of religion. As a Christian how does this affect you?

I think the show has a lot of good moral stories most of the time. You can take the messages anyway I think some of them.

Thanks

I love Star Trek...especially TNG--which is probably the more "anti-Christian" I'm disappointed that on several occasions stories from the Bible have been refered to as myth and the devil has been portrayed as a big ugly red guy and, again, dismissed as a myth. But that being said...I grew up watching various incarnations of the show starting with the original series. I never did like DS9 and I don't really care for Enterprise. I just enjoy a peek into someone's view of the future and for the most part...at least...a positive vision is given.

I'm a huge Star Trek fan and I have noticed some of the anti-religion messages (although, it was very subtle).

But here's what we have to remember. "God" is a very genetic word. People believe in different gods. From the episodes that I have seen, it was more anti-religion then anti-Christianity.

I still watch it. I think it's good entertainment and only see it as that. I believe strongly that the Bible is truth so I hold onto that.

There was one episode (I don't know the name) where they went to a planet and the culture was a modern version of ancient Rome.
There was a group of people that the crew thought was worshipping the sun. This confused them, because sun worship wasn't part of Roman culture.
At the end Uhura set them straight by saying "They are worshiping the Son of God."

Star Trek is great, in almost any of it's incarnations. Some great writers, and great casts, have put together some of the most humourous tv for nearly 40 years. I think the ST reflects a lot of "society's" general concerns, beliefs and aspirations, so it isn't likely to support Christianity! But that said, I've enjoyed being able to talk about my affection for the show and develop relationships with other people who are more willing to listen to my views on the universe than they would if I had first headlocked them and tried to force them to admit all TV is the work of satan and out to destroy mankind....

(I get around to that on the third cup of coffee).

Cheers,
Ruby

I wouldn't classify it as "anti-religious" as "areligious," meaning it's not against religion just that it treats it as mostly irrelevant. Various characters and societies have their own personal religions/philosophies but there is not universal recognition of "God." Let's face it - our world is happily prancing down that path as we speak.

I have always enjoyed the Bajorans b/c of their religious devotion. I know the show tried to write it off since their "prophets" are actually "entities" - nothing supernatural about them, just another type of creature, but I thought it was thought provoking (and comforting) nonetheless.
