It's the ol' Dixiecrat bait and switch-a-roo. The right conveniently forgets that the party philosophies switched beginning in the early 60's with Republicans becoming more conservative and Democrats more progressive. Its the same reason why they try so hard to convince everyone they are the party of Lincoln, when the party platform is diametrically opposed to just about everything Lincoln stood and fought for.

Law enforcement stood by for hours as counterprotesters attacked the pro-Palestinian encampment at UCLA on April 30, which erupted into the worst violence stemming from the ongoing college protests around the country over Israel’s war in Gaza.

While a criminal investigation is underway into the assaults that occurred at UCLA, the identities of the most aggressive counterprotesters have gone largely unknown. A CNN review of footage, social media posts, and interviews found that some of the most dramatic attacks caught on camera that night were committed by people outside UCLA – not the university students and faculty who were eventually arrested.

“Edan went to bully the Palestinian students in the tents at UCLA and played the song that they played to the Nukhba terrorists in prison!” his mother boasted in Hebrew on Facebook, referencing Hamas. She circled an image of him that had been broadcast on the local news.

Other older men spotted among the mob looked familiar to local public school mom Angie Givant as she followed what happened that Tuesday night on social media: a group of right-wing provocateurs who she’d seen protesting LGBTQ rights in public schools at school board and city council meetings around Los Angeles.

One of the older men, Narek Palyan, joined the group of counterprotesters despite having posted anti-Jewish tropes on his social media accounts.

Edan On is one of two protestors/counterprotestors to be charged by the city. No other charges will be filed relating to events at UCLA or USC.

Most arrested during USC, UCLA Israel-Hamas war protests won’t be charged, L.A. city attorney says​

City Atty. Hydee Feldstein Soto said that while her office received more than 300 referrals from arrests made during last spring’s demonstrations at both campuses, only two people would be charged. Three others will be referred to informal prosecutorial proceedings.

The two suspects facing criminal charges were identified as Edan On and Matthew Katz.

On, a pro-Israel demonstrator, was charged with battery and assault with a deadly weapon and Katz was charged with battery, false imprisonment and resisting arrest, according to the city attorney’s office. Most of those charges are misdemeanors.

Three others — identified as Ali Abuamouneh, Karla Maria Aguilar and David Fischel — were sent to city attorney hearings, which are informal proceedings conducted as an alternative to a misdemeanor criminal prosecution, according to the statement.

Abuamouneh and Aguilar were arrested at USC while Fischel was arrested at UCLA.

Feldstein Soto said the UCLA Police Department referred 245 arrests and all were declined for filing due to insufficient evidence. [93 referrals from LAPD/USC]

Demonstrators arrested at UCLA are finally getting their phones back, but it might not be easy​

For nearly a year, the UCLA Police Department has kept the cellphones of 40 UCLA students they arrested during last year’s mass demonstrations over the war in Gaza.

On Monday, the university’s police department said it would give phones back to the students.

But students will only have two weeks from the date they receive written notification from the department to retrieve their phones before they are destroyed, said Cynthia Anderson-Barker, an attorney with the lawyer’s guild.

Sabrina Darwish, a criminal defense attorney based in Santa Ana, said she and Anderson-Barker began to request the phones from the police department after the May 6 arrests of more than 40 students inside a parking structure at UCLA.

On has apparently moved to Israel and joined the IDF. Unclear whether he will return to face the misdemeanor charges.

On was first identified by CNN last year. Multiple videos showed him in a white hoodie and face mask wildly swinging a pipe at demonstrators.

University police initially asked the L.A. County district attorney’s office to bring felony charges against On, but prosecutors declined, citing his age, the minimal injuries suffered by his victim and his lack of a criminal record, according to court documents. Still, prosecutors referred his case to Feldstein Soto for misdemeanor charges.

Feldstein Soto last month charged On with battery and exhibiting a deadly weapon, records show. He is due in court in late May. On’s attorney declined to comment.

Last month, independent journalist Eric Levai published photos that purported to show On standing outside an Israel Defense Forces recruitment center near Tel Aviv. Levai also highlighted a TikTok post, purportedly from On, showing him in IDF fatigues.

Last year, court records show, On successfully petitioned a judge to return his Israeli passport, which had been seized after his arrest. His attorney argued in court filings that On was not a flight risk.
