Son of God, in the Old Testament, is primarily a designation for Israel. And hence it is used also for the King - specifically David - because the King, in Old Testament thinking, is representative of his people. Whatever is true of the King is true of the people and vice-versa. So David is God's son, and any Davidic annointed King could be called God's son. So when Jesus accepted being called God's son, that title would have been heard in his world as a Messianic title - a claim to be Israel's representative King.

After Jesus' resurrection his followers came to realise that not only was Jesus Israel's representative King, but the whole world's representative, and quite literally God's son in a sense no-one before had ever imagined.

That said, I don't think you can say that there are numerous references to prophets being called "God's son" - other than David who did you have in mind?

Also, the King James Version describes Jesus as the only begotten son, which is unique from the other children of God (i.e. Christians).

Jesus also describes himself as the "Son of Man" which is a title describing a human being. So Jesus is both God's begotten son and also human at the same time (i.e. God in the flesh).

We're all sons of God in the sense that God is our Father whom we can reach out to. However, Jesus Christ was literally conceived by God (ie the Holy Spirit), and no one else in history has been conceived by the Holy Spirit. So not only is Jesus the Son of God in the sense that God is everyone's Father, He was literally conceived by God, whereas we ordinary, non-divine human beings are conceived by mortal men.

How do Christians know this? From these verses:

When we Christians refer to Jesus Christ as being the Son of God, we mean that in its most literal sense. The Virgin Mary was his mother; from her he obtained his humanity. God himself is his Father; from him he obtained his spirituality, as well as his power to teach, to heal, and to save.

Dear Eazy E. God is Spirit, Holy Spirit. God-Father, God-Son, and God Holy-Spirit. God-Father made us, God-Son died that we might live, and He is now with God, our Intercessor who pleads our prayers, and God Holy-Spiritwho is in the world, and carries on the work which Jesus started. All three being ONE GOD, our Heavenly Father, who loves us and wants us back again. Men and women, who love God and follow Jesus back to where we came from, (Christians) are God`s sons and daughters. We know that the Holy Trinity, Father Son and Holy spirit, are all working together to redeem Mankind. I say this with love. Greetings from Emmy, sister in Christ.
