  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Well, yeah, I think most of network TV sucks. But I don't see any reason to be uptight about something silly like a male character being changed to female. It's an interpretation. Put down your pitchforks!

I don't believe that wanting classic stories to maintain their authors intent is being uptight.

If you feel that an author's work should be changed, then that's fine. I believe I should be equally free to express my dislike for such changes if they take place. Its really not a matter of me being narrow minded and you being open minded. Its more a matter of likes and dislike.

If someone wanted to make a movie about your book, but wanted to change a bunch of stuff in it...change some characters around, etc, how would you feel about that? Would you be okay with it because, heck, your book became a movie!!! Or would you be frustrated because you did all the hard work...those are your characters, your words, your story and these people want to mess it all up for their gain?

Like I said, it's an interpretation. Sherlock Holmes has been around so long... how many times can you retread something exactly before it gets boring? It's been adapted over 200 times... more than enough of those adaptations have been faithful.

If characters I've created are still being used over a century from now, I'll be ecstatic (not to mention dead). I don't care if someone adapts it as a comedy instead of a drama, or science fiction instead of a western. I don't care if a character's gender or ethnicity or hairstyle is changed, what matters is the role they play in the story.

Just the fact that people are still making Sherlock Holmes stories over 100 years later is one of the best compliments a writer could receive. Of course you don't have to watch it... I sure don't.

I wacthed one episode and fell asleep halfway through. I don't see how it can get better.
