Hello, Good Afternoon, I'm MoPo. I was saved about 4 months ago and am truley hungry for the LORD. My desire to grow is very strong. The church I was going to (Pentacostal) was teaching me some things on how to handle my daughters (3 yrs. old) medical situation. She was born premature weighing 1lb. 11.5oz.. She has had 1 heart surgery, 2 brain surgeries, slight cerebral palsey, etc. I have full custody of her (her name is Serenity) and am raising her to be a strong, GOD-fearing woman. I have no support from family and have no friends in this area. I have decided to leave this church (2 weeks ago).
My heart has really been tugging on me to visit a Seventh Day Adventist Church. Now I know your familiar with all the slack this church gets. I dont want to let the world steer me away from where I am supposed to be. Please just, off the top of your head, tell me a little bit about why people might try to pursuade me from attending a SDA Church? Any info. is appreciated. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS

First off, you'll most likely hear that we are legalists who reject grace because we keep the Sabbath.

You can point out that Jesus kept the Sabbath too.

Secondly, you'll no doubt hear about how we supposedly use mind control and other cultic techniques, which, to be honest, is quite absurd! Our churches are just like normal churches, aside from our unique beliefs.

Oh, and how could I forget... you'll hear about how we supposedly worship Ellen White. If you don't know who that is, she was a Prophet living in the late 1800s and early 1900s (the highlight of her ministry was an amazing health message that science has only recently discovered!). Next to Agatha Christie, she's published the most books of all time. So you might want to read her books for yourself and be your own judge. I recommend Steps to Christ for starters. You can read it here if you'd like: http://www.egwtext.whiteestate.org/sc/sc.html

I hope you decide to visit a church near you. Ask the Pastor if you have any questions or would like to study indepth. I will pray that God will lead you!

If you want to study more in-depth about what Adventists believe, I would recommend the Amazing Facts Storacles lessons. You can read the written Bible studies or watch the videos for free.

As far as the criticisms of our denomination, I would say that the most common thing that people accuse us of is legalism because we keep the Sabbath. Some say that the seventh-day Sabbath was only for the Jews and that Jesus instituted Sunday as the new Christian day of worship (a claim for which there is no biblical evidence). Others say that the Ten Commandments are no longer relevant to Christians at all. Whatever their reasons for disagreeing with our beliefs on this, they all seem to be of the opinion that we keep the Sabbath in order to try to earn salvation. However, we believe that following God's commandments, including the Sabbath commandment, is an expression of our love for God and a result of the desire that He puts in our hearts to do His will, not an attempt to work our way to heaven.

AMEN Sunrunner my wife and I recently left the Baptist Church over issues that we faced while taking a Bible study from a woman from the SDA.. We heard all of the points you listed as well as they are a cult ( I belive the info came from the book Kigdom of the Cults or some such, but as I pointed out the author of the book made an apoplogy to the SDA in the second edition), they use thier own bible(The Clear Word or something like that). From what I have seen and learned in attending services on Sabbath you should check it out MoPo the one most important thing that the SDA church will preach and teach is Salvation through Christ and by no other means and well I just feel more at home there than I did in the Baptist church. Although we have not as of yet joined we are waiting for my work to give me Sabbath off so we can attend regularly.

Sorry MoPo for the delay, this is kind of a slow moving forum compared to some. Please don't feel we don't care or that we are not interested in you. I will pray for you and your baby. One thing that you must know for sure about the SDA church is that it follows the Bible like no other church in the world that I have found to date.

Holy Father I lift up this baby Serenity to your loving arms Father. She has had a hard time of it Lord in the short while she has been here. Please Father wrap her in your loving arms and heal her if it is your will so she can be a shining becon of light for all the world to see. So she can glorify your Name under heaven and show the world Your Grace and Love. Praise you Holy One for hearing my prayer, in Jesus Name, Amen

God Bless you

Awesome! Nice to meet you!

Ah, yes. The notorious Clear Word. It's actually not a Bible and it wasn't published by the Church. It's a paraphrase of the Bible made by an Adventist (not the Adventists). It's somewhat popular, but I'd reckon to guess that most Adventists don't own a copy.

I will definitely be praying that you will get the Sabbath off!

This is as has been said a slow moving Forum.

Probably some of the main concerns are that some folk tend to think we are a cult.

I do not believe so at all. We believe in the "Trinity", that we are "saved by grace through faith", the "Second Coming" of Jesus Christ. etc
