Continuing with my studies. I would like to know, How would you define sin.
  • Some say it is what separates us from a loving father etc...
  • Some say it is having wrong thoughts etc...
  • Some say it is doing something that displeases God etc...
  • But how would you define what sin is???
After I get some of your thoughts on this topic, then my next post will be my last and final post.

Which would put the "cats amongst the pidgeons" so to speak, and will change a many persons thoughts on this topic.

hmmm... I'd say it's all of the above. Sin is something that displeases God, which in turn separates us from Him because of the disapproval (I think of it as kind of being 'sent to your room' - because you can always come back to Him, you aren't locked in the room forever). As far as having 'wrong thoughts' it's hard to control your initial thought.---woooowoooowoooo thought police woooowoooowooo...what you do about that thought is what I think is most important.
Just my guesses...

I'd agree as well.

It is all about what dislikes.
God doesn't like people killing people, so that is a sin.
But killing is not necessarily a sin, because God killing people is not a considered a sin in his own eyes.

Simply put, sin= DENIAL of REALITY.
Many people are totally confused about the meaning of sin, and that is because they are totally confused about God, Life, Jesus, Creation etc. On one hand they talk about sin and on the other about "free will" and they can not reconcile the two, which causes real confusion in their minds and their lives. In order to understand sin one must know basic things about God and Creation and then they will understand what sin is. It is like this:
The NATURE of God is Love, Truth, Joy, Mercy, Kindness, Goodness etc but the NATURE of God is NOT hate, malice, jealousy, meanness. The Nature of God is the REALITY of the WHOLE of Creation. The Creation is divided into three realitiesure spirit, semi-spirit and physical. The physical reality, in which we exist, is a time-space, EVOLUTIONARY and EXPERIENTIAL reality. We, humans, and many other intelligences created in this physical reality, start our ascent towards God through trials and tribulations of life, learning along the way the Truth of what God is.
Because this physical reality is EVOLUTIONARY and EXPERIENTIAL , error and truth exist side by side as a CONTRAST to each other. Error, however, not being a true nature of God, is actually NOT real even though it does seem very real to us. Error, hate, malice, meanness, jealousy etc are "real illusions" in this time-space, physical creation.
Ours is an evolutionaty and experiential ascend toward God. Every step along the way we are faced with decisions. We notice that EVERY SINGLE TIME we embrace the Truth that God is ( Love, Kindness, Goodness) we GROW and EVOLVE, while the embrace of hate, malice, meanness brings decay and retardation.
This is all EVIDENT if you just observe and discern life !!
Embracing God's qualities brings satisfaction and happiness because that is the True Nature of Reality while embracing the "real illusion" of hate, malice etc brings disappointment and emptiness because they are NOT REAL. Here, then, is the answer to what sin is.
By using your God given "free will" any SANE mind should be able to see and discern what works (God) and what doesn't ( illusion ) and then CHOOSE GOD. However, any SANE mind(?) that CONSCIOUSLY and INTENTIONALY CHOOSES evil, hate and malice and deliberatelly embraces those actions which bring decay and death, chooses to work against God=SIN.

Not entirely true. Athiests can be happy with their athiesm, and to too can a sinner. Also, what exactly does a 'real illusion' mean. Theoretically, anyone here who believes that they are a devoted Christian may be delusional about reality as God would define (the) reality for man. So, in a strangely quirky world, perhaps you are supposed to hate (etc.) That is, suppose for the sake of arguement, that not hating is a sin, and that not hating is in fact destructive.
As soon as you introduce doubt, you also introduce the possibility for your own failure. For there to be Christianity (or any faith) there must me some basis of certainty. Some assumtions must be taken as fact, and not assumptions. In the case of sin, sins (each) must be fact, and not open to discussion (other than to try a person for having violated it).
To be able to interpret the Bible requires how to interpret the Bible. If you can't question the truth, how do can you interpret the truth?
Anyone?

Blissman writes:

Athiests can be happy with their athiesm, and to too can a sinner.
In both of those examples the adage: "Ignorance is bliss" applies. They know not what happiness is because their CONFUSED MINDS (unspiritualized minds) have severed, or never established, contact with the spirit of God which dwells in their minds and their hearts.Charles Manson, Hitler, and many others are an example of those confused minds. Devoid of spirituality, yet extremely sharp INTELLECTUALLY, they are able to kill, and justify their actions, without batting an eyelash.

Also, what exactly does a 'real illusion' mean.

"Real illusion" is exactly what I described in my post.To help you understand, let us take the term "darkness" and explore it. Everybody will swear to it that darkness, as a physical phenomenon, exists but in reality it does NOT EXIST. Nobody has ever measured darkness and I can't go to the store to buy a "darkness bulb" to turn on when I feel like having some darkness.Dictionary defines darkness as "absence of LIGHT".
This same analogy applies when defining what SIN is. Rape, murder and plunder are like darkness and because they are NOT SPIRITUAL reality, embracing them does not lead to growth and evolvement but only to decay and death. No SANE MIND (spiritualized mind) will ever choose rape, murder and plunder, because the SANE MIND is able to DISCERN reality from illusion.
Lucifer's folly was NOT that he rebelled against God but that he didn't REPENT once he realised that he was wrong. Lucifer consciously chose to deny the SPIRITUAL REALITY of CREATION( Love, Truth, Joy, Mercy, Goodness) and instead embraced the illusion of rape ,murder and plunder. Lucifer chose SIN.

Sin is knowingly and willingly causing harm or causing to harm physically, emotionally or spiritually oneself or another by thought, action or influence.

When you take a word designating a vice like "gluttony" and ask the question "why is it wrong?" and then follow the logic back to the beginning, you'd find the answer as that it causes physical harm to self, which is wrong and therefore would be considered a sin to conduct oneself in that fashion willingly and knowingly.

The key to the whole thing is that sin has purpose. The same act done in ignorance, while still wrong, is not a sin because the person didn't know any better. Once the proverbial fig leaf has been removed through knowledge or experience, god expects us to conduct ourselves with diligence and respect.
